Zoro vs. Ryuma

Zoro vs. Ryuma: Monster Power Scaling and One Piece

Monsters, Eiichiro Oda's one-shot manga before publishing the wildly popular, recently got its anime adaptation which was released on Netflix earlier this month. The one-shot follows the legendary samurai of Wano and features his famous act of slaying a dragon.

Ryuma's powerful swordsmanship reminds us of One Piece's other prominent swordsman: . Besides their swordsmanship, the two also have more connections to each other. Zoro faced Ryuma's zombie in the Thriller Bark Arc and defeated him. Later, it was revealed that Zoro was a descendant of the Shimotsuki family, and therefore Ryuma.

These two swordsmen from two different eras have a lot in common, leading us to wonder what would happen if they clashed at full strength. Here's our take on Zoro vs. Ryuma and how their powers compare:

Roronoa Zoro: Powers and Abilities

Roronoa Zoro is the swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates and the first to join the crew of . He hails from the village of Shimotsuki in East Blue where he learned swordsmanship as a child and vowed to become the best swordsman in the world, especially after the death of his friend and rival, Kuina. His current goal is to defeat and win the title of best swordsman in the world.

Powers and Abilities

Zoro is currently one of the strongest characters in One Piece. He is the second strongest of his crew, behind his captain. Not only that, but he is also a member of the Worst Generation, being one of only two non-captain members of the group. A clue to Zoro's power and potential lies in his high bounty, which currently stands at 1,111,000,000 Bellies.

  • Zoro's swordsmanship style is iconic not only in One Piece but in all anime and manga in general. He practices the Three Swords Style by wielding three swords, two in each of his hands and one in his mouth.
  • Currently, the three swords Zoro possesses are Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu, and Enma, which previously belonged to .
  • Besides Three-Sword Style, Zoro can also use Two-Sword Style, One-Sword Style, No-Sword Style, and Foxfire Style. In the latest style of swordsmanship, he can cut fire.
  • Zoro is a high-caliber swordsman and his skills have only improved throughout the story. Right now, he can cut through almost anything with his swords, be it metal or an entire ship, without breaking a sweat.
  • He is also a seasoned practitioner of Haki. In fact, he is one of the few characters in the story who can perform all three types of Haki.
  • Zoro's Busoshoku Haki is very strong. He can infuse Busoshoku Haki into his swords to strengthen his attacks. His Kenbunshoku Haki is also very skilled, although he has not been seen using it much.
  • As for Haoshoku Haki, Zoro unlocks this particular Haki during the Onigashima Arc, becoming one of the few characters who can use it and one of the few non-leaders to do so.

Shimotsuki Ryuma: Powers and Abilities

Shimotsuki Ryuma: Powers and Abilities

Shimotsuki Ryuma was a legendary samurai from Wano known as the world's greatest swordsman. He lived during Wano's golden age, when the nation was known as the Land of Gold. Because of his mastery of the sword and the nobility of his personality, he was known as the Sword God and the King. His most significant achievement was slaying a dragon during the events of Monsters.

Powers and Abilities

Ryuma is one of the greatest swordsmen of all time, revered across generations due to his great feats. During the events of Monsters, he was shown to be extremely proficient in swordsmanship as a young man, being able to defeat a powerful enemy like Shirano and easily slay a deadly dragon. It can be assumed that he has only gotten stronger over time since this incident.

  • Unlike Zoro's three-sword style, Ryuma practiced more standard swordsmanship with a single sword. He wielded Shusui, one of the 21 great swords, and was buried with it. In the anime adaptation of Monsters, he kills the dragon with his Shusui while in the manga it was another sword.
  • As a slayer of a dragon, there is no need to explain how great a swordsman Ryuma was. He could even cut a copper statue like it was nothing.
  • Although the true extent of Ryuma's use of Haki is unknown, he is confirmed to be capable of using Ryou, the advanced form of Busoshoku Haki taught in Wano. His Busoshoku Haki was strong enough to turn Shusui into a black blade.

Zoro vs. Ryuma: comparison

Zoro vs. Ryuma: Comparison

Comparing Zoro and Ryuma's powers can be a bit tricky because while Zoro's powers and abilities are explored extensively in the story, we don't see much of Ryuma. Additionally, the two previously fought on Thriller Bark, with Zoro winning and receiving Shusui from Ryuma as a prize.

But their fight on Thriller Bark cannot be considered the true outcome of Zoro versus Ryuma. Indeed, at that time, Ryuma was a zombie carrying Brook's shadow, which gave him Brook's abilities and skills, rather than himself. Zoro was clearly stronger than Brook, so it was no surprise that he won the fight.

But if Zoro fought Ryuma with his full strength, would he be able to win?

We believe that with Zoro's current skills and increase in power, he could win the Zoro vs. Ryuma fight. Ryuma was the strongest swordsman of his time; this may not be true in the present. And as for Zoro, when it comes to pure swordsmanship, his skills are currently only second to Mihawk.

Not only that, but Zoro is also capable of using all three types of Haki and his Haoshoku-infused attacks can be deadly to any opponent, as we saw during his fights against and. Given Ryuma's reputation, he might have been able to use all three types of Haki as well, but we're not sure. So, from now on, Zoro has the advantage over his ancestor.

Zoro has also fought all kinds of powerful opponents, which gives us an idea that he has probably already surpassed Ryuma in terms of swordsmanship. So our verdict for now is that the Pirate Hunter would win the Zoro vs. Ryuma fight if they faced each other at full strength.

Conclusion

This is where we conclude our discussion of Zoro vs. Ryuma. As we mentioned before, we can see Zoro winning the fight based on his individual power and abilities that we know about. But remember, this verdict also comes from our lack of knowledge about the true extent of Ryuma's abilities. So until we find out, we'll have to consider our resident moss head the winner of the Zoro vs. Ryuma fight.
