Toji versus Maki: is the current Maki stronger than the Toji? (Jujutsu Kaisen)

In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen where characters are divided into groups of and , two characters stand out like no other.

and are unique because, unlike the other major characters, they do not have any cursed energy within them, although they are both elite. But who is stronger between these two special characters? Here is our response to the Toji vs Maki debate.

Toji vs. Maki: Similarities

Toji vs Maki: Similarities

I. Zero Cursed Energy

What makes Maki and Toji so different from the rest is their lack of cursed energy. Toji was born without any cursed energy while Maki's cursed energy was lower than that of a non-wizard.

In Maki's case, all of her cursed energy is carried by her twin sister Mai, leaving her with little to none. This requires him to use cursed energy-infused glasses to even see the curses.

Their cursed lack of energy caused Toji and Maki to be ostracized by the Zenin family who were proud of their precious . This caused them to resent the clan and leave it for good.

II. Heavenly Restriction

Toji traded his lack of cursed energy for superhuman physical prowess in a celestial restriction. As a result, he possesses immense physical strength, speed, agility, and durability.

His physical powers are so extreme that he could fight and even defeat teenagers and two special grade jujutsu wizards.

For Maki, her celestial restriction comes when Mai dies, taking with her all the cursed energy between the two of them and leaving Maki with nothing.

With her complete lack of cursed energy, Maki gains the same superhuman physical powers as Toji. She becomes incredibly strong, fast, agile and durable.

Maki channels her new powers into killing the entire Zenin family. The prestigious family, populated by powerful elite sorcerers, is completely destroyed by Maki.

She kills Hei and Kukuri units with merciless power, cementing her position as one of the strongest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

III. Cursed tools

Another similarity Toji and Maki share is their use of cursed tools. As non-wizards without cursed energy, they channel the powers of the cursed tool and combine them with their physical abilities.

IV. Benefits

Although their lack of cursed energy seems at first to be a disadvantage, in reality it is more of an advantage. Due to the lack of cursed energy they emit, curses treat them as simple buildings, giving them many opportunities to surprise their enemies.

Barriers and can't cage them either. The only way a barrier can trap them is if they want to or if the barrier has the necessary external structure.

Character Profiles:

I. Maki Zenin

Maki Zenin

One of the major supporting characters in the story, Maki Zenin is a second year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High. She is the daughter of Ogi Zenin and the twin sister of the one who is a student at Kyoto Jujutsu High.

Maki is also the cousin of Toji Fushiguro and the classmate of Toge Inumaki and Panda. She plays an important role in both Jujutsu Kaisen and its prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0. It is only in the Perfect Preparation Arc that Maki channels her full potential.

Weapons

Since Maki doesn't have enough cursed energy, she has to use cursed tools to exorcise the curses. The cursed tools she has used so far are:

  • Dragon Bone
  • Playful Cloud
  • Split Soul Katana

Along with this, she also used many cursed energy-infused weapons.

II. Toji Fushiguro

Toji Fushiguro

Introduced in the Gojo's Past Arc, Toji Fushiguro is a hitman, known as the Sorcerer Killer, and the father and stepfather of . He is originally from the Zenin clan but left the family after suffering abuse and humiliation for years due to his lack of cursed energy.

In the past, Toji was hired by the Time Vessel Association to kill the Star Plasma Vessel, that is, Riko Amanai. While doing so, he clashed with Gojo and, after a fierce battle, seemingly killed him. However, Gojo reappeared, rejuvenating himself with the Reverse Cursed technique and killed the assassin.

Toji is later resurrected by Ogami as a merciless killing machine. But after coming face to face with Megumi and realizing he would have to fight his son, Toji committed suicide to prevent this.

Weapons

Although Toji can easily fight other wizards with his physical abilities alone, he cannot exorcise curses without cursed tools. He has an inventory curse, loyal to him as a pet, which contains his cursed tools. The tools he uses are:

  • Chain of a Thousand Miles
  • Inverted Spear of Heaven
  • Playful Cloud
  • Split Soul Katana

Toji vs. Maki: who will win?

Toji vs Maki
Toji vs. Maki

If we consider a battle between Toji and the Maki that was first introduced in the story, the winner would be quite easy to deduce. Toji would be an overwhelming force and none of Maki's cursed tools or natural athleticism could hope to counter that.

However, the Maki who emerges from the Zenin house after the Perfect Preparation Arc is completely different from his former self.

A clash between Toji and the current Maki would be close. Both share the majority of their powers and abilities, as well as some cursed tools like the Split Soul Katana and the Perfect Cloud.

They both possess superhuman physical abilities and keen cunning. They would face each other blow for blow.

But if we think about it objectively, it becomes obvious that Toji would always have the upper hand in the fight.

And this is entirely due to the vast experience he has with Maki. Although Maki has slaughtered members of the Zenin clan, she has not fought as many powerful opponents as Toji.

So, even though the fight would be tense and close, Toji Fushiguro would win it.

Is the current Maki stronger than the Toji?

Is Current Maki Stronger Than Toji?
Toji was stronger than current Maki

To answer whether the current Maki is stronger than Toji, we would have to say: no, she is not. If we only consider physical prowess and limitations, then they are currently on par.

Both have superhuman physical abilities beyond the limits thanks to Celestial Restraint and cannot be harmed by Domain Expansions.

But Toji still has superior experience and cunning in battle compared to Maki that would help him in times of need. The opponents Toji faces and frankly often dominates are much stronger than the opponents Maki has fought and won against thus far. But that would surely change soon now that the series is steadily moving towards its conclusion.

Conclusion

In the conclusion of this Toji vs. Maki debate, we would end it by saying that even though Maki cannot yet win against Toji in the present, she will surely become stronger and face an even greater opponent, i.e. . It's obvious that Gege Akutami intends to make Maki the true equal of Toji Fushiguro, and it will happen sooner rather than later.
