Asuka has a quarter Japanese blood. Asuka is originally from Germany, where she was raised, although her nationality is American. Asuka's native language is German, and in both the series and manga, she tends to swear in German. Asuka was born to an American father, known only as Mr. Langley, and a German-Japanese mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu. Additionally, she also has a stepmother, Langley's second wife. She is a child prodigy and earned a college degree in an unspecified field as a teenager; she also speaks Japanese fluently, but has difficulty reading and writing kanji. Asuka trained for years from a young age to become a pilot of the Evangelion.
