Like Luffy, Zoro wants to be the best in his class, that is, he wants to become the best swordsman in the world, surpassing his idol and rival, Dracule Mihawk, who is considered the best swordsman in the world. How and when does Zoro obtain Shusui?

Like O Wazamono, Shusui is one of the thirty-two best katanas in the world. It is considered the national treasure of Wano Country and is the sword that enabled the exploits of the legendary samurai Ryuma. After many battles at his side, the sword became a black blade. Before acquiring Enma, Zoro was convinced that Shusui would be decisive in the battle against Kaido's Beasts Pirates.

This blade greatly increases the power of its user's attacks. Zoro demonstrated this by first using Hyakuhachi Pound Ho against Oz; the air blade created by Shusui was so large that it absorbed the air blades of Zoro's other two swords, Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu, to form a single air blade with tenfold destructive power.

Shusui wasn't always a dark blade. She only became one after many battles alongside Ryuma; upon his death, she was buried with him in Wano Country, where she is considered a national treasure. Twenty-three years before the Straw Hat Pirates arrived in Wano Country, Ryuma's grave was plundered by the ex-privateer Gecko Moria, plunging the entire country into deep sadness.

Ryuma appeared as a zombie in Thriller Bark and confronted Zoro. Following his defeat, he bequeathed his Shusui to Zoro, which replaced his old katana, which had been destroyed after the events at Enies Lobby. After seeing it in Zoro's hands, Kin'emon was determined to confront him so he could return his national treasure to Wano Country. These events were depicted in chapter 467 of the manga, collected in volume 48. As for the anime, the events occurred in episode 362.

How did Zoro lose Shusui?

Later, the sword was stolen by a dwarf named Wicca while Zoro was eating at Acacia. However, he managed to catch up with the dwarf and retrieve his sword. Zoro is accused of being responsible for a series of murders and is sentenced to Seppuku. He is also accused of ransacking Ryuma's grave due to possessing his sword, Shusui.

In reality, Toyama Tsujigiro, the corrupt magistrate of Flower Capital who ordered his execution, only wanted to steal the sword. But Zoro smelled blood on him and identified him as the real culprit. He knocked him down, retrieved the black blade, and escaped execution. Shusui was later stolen by Gyukimaru, who returned it to Ryuma's grave.

To keep Shusui in Wano Country, Kozuki Hiyori asks Zoro to renounce it. In exchange, she offers to give him her own sword, Enma, which was bequeathed to her by her father, Kozuki Oden. After a brief hesitation, Zoro accepts the offer. And so, Zoro lost Shusui, who is now in Wano, as part of Ryuma's grave.

Will Zoro get Shusui back?

Well, this is a question we can't answer with 100% certainty, but we're pretty sure we know what's going to happen here. As we said, Zoro obtained Shusui after defeating Ryuma, which was a great honor for him. It was also a form of recognition for his skills, especially in light of the fact that Zoro wants to surpass Mihawk and become the best swordsman in the world. Since Ryuma was a truly legendary figure in the history of swordsmanship, getting such recognition was a big deal for Zoro. Furthermore, Shusui itself was an incredible weapon, and it greatly enhanced Zoro's abilities.

That's why it was somewhat odd that Zoro abandoned Shusui, even though he received Enma as a replacement. But it made sense, and it was a noble gesture that showed, once again, that Zoro wasn't in it for power, but because he sincerely wanted to become the world's greatest swordsman. Someone else would have taken the two blades, but not Zoro. And that's precisely why we believe Zoro won't get Shusui back, at least not permanently.

Zoro respects the blade's legacy and its importance to the people of Wano Country. This is why he would never have resorted to stealing it, especially since he received Oden's Enma as a replacement. On top of that, the protagonists have left Wano Country, and unless someone brings Zoro the sword, it's unrealistic to expect him to return just to get it.
