Wilhelm van Astrea is a former member of the Lugnica Royal Guard, and is currently a member of Camp Crusch, acting as a bodyguard for Crusch's Carcasses. He was married to Theresia van Astrea, the former Sword Saint. He has long white hair, blue eyes, and a white beard and mustache. He wears a black butler's uniform with a white shirt. Wilhelm is polite and well-mannered, and often speaks formally. He is loyal and protective of people he considers friends.
History
Wilhelm came from an old noble house and, in his youth, found much-needed purpose in learning the sword. By the age of 14, he was known as the most skilled swordsman in the region. Following a dispute with his older brother, Wilhelm traveled to the capital with the goal of becoming a knight. He made a name for himself in the Demihuman War , but he still found himself dissatisfied and without a purpose in life.
During a forced leave in the capital, he meets a young woman named Theresia van Astrea while training on an abandoned construction site. She seems completely indifferent to his sword training, and he pays little attention to her seemingly distant outlook on life. Eventually, her presence alleviates his melancholy, and Wilhelm begins to concern himself with more than just fencing and headbutting. His new outlook eventually leads to a promotion to knighthood.
Soon after, Wilhelm learns that his homeland is in the throes of civil war. He rushes home to find his hometown ransacked and occupied by more demihumans than he's ever faced before. He fights anyway, but soon finds himself pushed to the limit. At his wit's end, he is saved by the current Sword Saint—Theresia—who effortlessly cuts through everything in her path. He confronts her in the capital, believing she has humiliated him. They argue and part ways. Two years later, Wilhelm duels her at the end-of-war ceremony and defeats her, vowing to take on the Sword Saint's burden so she can live the most peaceful life she desires.
Things go well for a while and they build a life and family together. Unfortunately, Theresia is struck down when she goes out for the White Whale . Seeking revenge, Wilhelm enters the service of Crusch Karsten. He eventually gets his chance in Arc 3 and the demonic beast is killed. A year later, he accompanies Crusch on a journey to Priestelle . As the Archbishops of Sin attack, he discovers that his deceased Theresia is among the enemies they face. He attempts to defeat her alone, but fails.Reinhard intervenes and cuts her down mercilessly. She returns to herself and her memories as she dies at Wilhelm's hands and they finally get a chance to say goodbye.
Relationships
Theresa of Astrea - Before marrying, Theresia helped Wilhelm understand why he was fighting, changing his life for the better. When Wilhelm discovered that Theresia was the Sword Saint, he vowed to protect her by fulfilling the Sword Saint's duties in her stead. She allowed him to do so after defeating her in a duel. After Theresia was killed by the White Whale, William became driven by a desire for revenge.
Heinkel Astrea - Wilhelm does not think highly of his son Heinkel and partly blames him for Theresia's death, as Theresia only chose to fight the Hakugei because Heinfel refused.
Reinhard van Astrea - Wilhelm and Reinhard do not get along well, as Wilhelm blames Reinhard for Theresia's death at the hands of the Hakugei. However, Wilhelm attempted to mend the relationship between them after successfully defeating the Hakugei's White Whale . Wilhelm later changed his mind about this after seeing Reinhard show no remorse in killing Theresia's resurrected corpse. Wilhelm began addressing Reinhard by his full name after this, indicating that he no longer considered him family.
Crusch's Carcasses - Wilhelm supported Crusch in exchange for help in fighting the White Whale , but chose to stay with her even after defeating it.
Felix Argyle - Wilhelm and Felix share a bond of trust, as Wilhelm has opened up to him about his past, a topic Wilhelm usually doesn't discuss.
Subaru Natsuki - Wilhelm respects Subaru after Subaru helped him defeat the White Whale. He told Subaru a few things about his past, which he doesn't talk about often.
SKILLS
Master Swordsman - Wilhelm is exceptionally skilled in sword fighting, so much so that he was able to defeat the ancient Sword Saint during his youth. His sword skills and ruthless fighting style earned him the title of Demon Sword None.
