One Piece: Here's Why Shanks Hated and Sliced Kid!

At Proxymité Japon, we've already established that Shanks is one of the best characters in Oda's One Piece series. The red-haired pirate is an epic badass and one of the most beloved characters in the entire series. Shanks is beloved by many, if not all, One Piece fans, but not every character in the series likes him. And while Luffy adores him, Eustass Kid has a very strained relationship with Shanks and wants to overthrow him, but his attempts have been unsuccessful. In manga chapter 1079, Shanks and Kid face off again, and in this article, we'll tell you how the fight ended.

It is unknown if Shanks actually hated Eustass Kid, but Kid held a grudge against him and wanted to overthrow him. While he was willing to risk significant collateral damage just to achieve this, Shanks flew into a rage and sliced Eustass Kid apart in one move, after which the giants Dorry and Brogy destroyed his ship, apparently killing Kid and most of his crew.

The rest of this article will focus on the relationship between Shanks and Eustass Kid. Our main goal in this article is to determine whether Shanks actually hated Kid and whether he killed him in One Piece Chapter 1079. If you're not familiar with the entire story of One Piece, we must warn you that there will be spoilers in the following paragraphs.

Shanks and Eustass Kid had a strained relationship

Before the recent chapter 1079, Eustass Kid and Shanks had a very strained relationship. And even though Shanks didn't really care for Kid, the latter was obsessed with overthrowing the emperor. The first time he tried to do so, he forged an alliance with Captains Basil Hawkins and Scratchmen Apoo, but he failed miserably. He had a clash with Shanks' pirates, where he lost his arm and left his scars. It is still unknown whether Kid was cut by Shanks himself or by a member of his crew, but it is known that he received these injuries after his first fight with Shanks.

As time went on, they didn't really interact anymore. Kid was still obsessed with Shanks, but it didn't seem like Shanks cared too much about him; it didn't seem like Shanks was thinking about him. But the two crews clashed again after the Wano Country Arc, when the two crews clashed again on Elbaf. Shanks didn't want to mess with Kid too much because he was hunting Blackbeard, but Kid actually forced his hand.

Namely, Kid was somewhat excited by the prospect of facing Shanks, even though he was well aware that he might die in the process. He was soon forced to fight against Shanks' subordinates, which is why he decided to activate his new Damned Punk ability using his powerful railgun. Shanks uses his Kenbunshoku Haki to see into the future and observes the devastating damage the attack could cause, and decides that he simply won't allow it.

He ordered his crew to disperse and then headed towards Kid's ship, ordering Dorry and Brogy to watch his back. Just as Kid was about to fire, Shanks appeared on the ship and, catching him by surprise, used his Kamusari and destroyed his railgun with a single powerful blow, also seriously wounding Kid. Shanks then stopped as Kid's crew rushed to see what was happening to their captain. They begged Shanks not to kill him and even offered him their Road Poneglyphs in exchange.

And even though Shanks didn't actually kill him, Dorry and Brogy, in the background, prepared to use their Hakoku attack to destroy Kid's ship and crew. The two giants told them, before attacking, that if you point a cannon at someone's house, they should be prepared for their targets to retaliate. After that, they simply wiped out most of Kid's ship and crew, leaving their fate, as well as that of their captain, up in the air.

The child's fate is ultimately unknown.

So, as you can see, Eustass Kid's fate remains unknown for now, as officially stated. The final pages of Chapter 1079 suggest that Kid is indeed dead, but that might not be true. The last time we see Kid is when he was on his ship, motionless and unconscious, with his crew members begging Shanks not to kill him. And even if the Emperor didn't kill him, we saw that Dorry and Brogy did the job for him, completely eradicating a large portion of Kid's ship.

It's a well-known rule in anime and manga that unless you see a character die "on screen," they probably aren't dead. And even though we haven't seen Eustass Kid die, the situation is such that Kid could very well be dead. Namely, his ship was almost completely destroyed when Dorry and Brogy attacked its center, where Kid was also located, and since there was nothing left after the attack, it could very well be that Eustass Kid was wiped out along with the ship.

Another clue is the narrator's comment at the end of the chapter, which confirms that the entire crew wasn't defeated but "completely eradicated," which is a very interesting choice of words. Third, Eustass Kid, while a popular supporting character in the series, doesn't really compare to some of the other characters, and he won't be missed much.

That said, it seems more likely than not that Eustass Kid ultimately met his end at the hands of Shanks and his crew, and the aftermath of that fight will certainly be touched upon in future characters. But, knowing how anime and manga work, we can't really rule it out completely just yet, so we'll have to wait and see what Oda decides in the future.
