Super Saiyan 2 Transformation - Dragon Ball
Super Saiyan 2, also known as Super Saiyan Fifth Grade or Ascended Super Saiyan in the Funimation dub, is a Super Saiyan form that succeeds the first Super Saiyan transformation and precedes Super Saiyan 3. Super Saiyan forms are advanced transformations that enhance the power, energy, and abilities of the Saiyans, a race of warrior beings that appear throughout the Dragon Ball franchise, which comprises manga , anime , video games, music, merchandise, and much more. Super Saiyan 1 and 2 are similar in appearance and accomplishments, however, Super Saiyan 2 is far superior to the first form in terms of strength, power, speed, and overall energy output.
Anime and Manga
In the manga and anime, Super Saiyan 2 is first achieved byGohan while fighting Cell in the Cell Games, a fighting tournament held by Cell to demonstrate his power to the world. However, it is revealed during a flashback in the anime that Gohan technically first achieved this state while training with his father Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but was too exhausted to maintain the form. This explains why Goku knew the form before Gohan's fight with Cell and why he believed Gohan was capable of defeating Cell. After these events, Goku, Future Trunks Vegeta , and Caulifla are also able to achieve the form.
Form
There are several methods to achieve Super Saiyan 2. While slightly dependent on the user, all require the Saiyan to have first reached full Super Saiyan power and already possess a certain amount of energy. Once these initial conditions are met, Saiyans are able to achieve the form using four methods. The first is an intense emotional experience, in which raw emotional energy can trigger the Super Saiyan 2 state. The next method is through strict training and discipline. The third method of achieving the state is circumstantial. For example, if a Saiyan finds themselves in a situation that demands a quick and desperate solution, an instinctive and rapid transformation into Super Saiyan 2 may occur. The final method of achieving Super Saiyan 2 is through reacting and responding to the tingling sensation Saiyans sometimes feel in their backs.
Appearance
Upon reaching the Super Saiyan 2 form, Saiyans undergo a drastic physical transformation. The Saiyan's hair stands up even more dramatically than it did during the first Super Saiyan transformation. Likewise, the aura or force field around the user becomes more extreme, appearing more jagged and spiky instead of having a fluid, liquid form. This is due to the Saiyan simply producing more raw energy. The user's muscle mass remains relatively unchanged, unlike in the Super Saiyan 3 form. Another characteristic of the Super Saiyan 2's appearance is the electrical sparks that appear around the user. While this is generally true, the above physical description of the form has some notable exceptions, such as in Dragon Ball Super , in which the difference in Future Trunks' hair between the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 states is barely noticeable.
Improvements
In Dragon Ball Super, it is revealed that the original Saiyan transformation can be enhanced and strengthened through intense training and discipline. This is also revealed to be the case with Super Saiyan 2, which, if mastered through intensive training, can be enhanced to Super Saiyan 3. There are also other methods to increase the power of Super Saiyan 2. For example, Vegeta is able to amplify the form using rage and an ability called Quake of Fury, first seen when Bulma is slapped by Beer , which enrages Vegeta and transforms him into Super Saiyan 2 (Enraged). Super Saiyan 2 can also evolve into Super Saiyan Rage and Super Saiyan Berserk forms under the right conditions. In addition to the enhancements to the form, there are several other varieties and hybrid forms, including Super Saiyan Spirit Bomb, Super Saiyan Type C, and Legendary Super Saiyan.
Other anecdotes
The Super Saiyan 2 form is twice as strong as the first transformation, equating to a 100X boost over the Saiyan's base state. The first appearance of Super Saiyan 2 in a film was in Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unleashed , where Gohan uses it to defeat Bojack and his henchmen. Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Second Coming , Gohan uses the form to fight Broly. The Super Saiyan 2 form is adopted by Goku and Vegeta in the films Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon and Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn , where it is used in the fights against Hirudegarn and Janemba, respectively. It appears in many Dragon Ball Z video games, including Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II, where it is referred to as "Super Saiyan Rage" and Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, where Vegeta can be played in this form. The first time Gohan is able to maintain his form is when he witnesses the Cell Juniors' attack on the Dragon Ball Z team and the death of Android 16.
