Satella is also known as the Witch of Envy and is one of the Witches of Sin. She is a half-elf with a thing-like body, long silver hair, and blue-violet eyes. Emilia looks exactly like her. During a brief encounter with Subaru in Echidna : At a Tea Party, she wore a dress composed of black shadows that resonated with the rhythm of her heart.
History
Contrary to the fairy tales and history books written about her, Satella and the being known as the Witch of Envy are actually separate personalities. Approximately 400 years before the story begins, Satella the half-elf absorbed the Witch of Envy factors with which she had no compatibility. This resulted in the creation of the Witch of Envy personality. She eventually lost control, killed six other Witches of Sin, and nearly destroyed the world. The exact details of this event are still unclear, but according to these witches, via the powers of Echidna, it was not the Witch of Envy who was responsible, but rather Satella herself.
Regardless, this prompted some of the most powerful individuals of the time to band together to contain the threat. Volcanic , the (then) Sword Saint Reid Astrea , and the sage Flügel (though his name has been expunged from the history books) joined forces but still failed to completely kill her. Instead, Satella was sealed away in a shrine. Arc 6 is not yet complete and most of its elements are documented non-canonically in the web novel , there are rumors that at least one aspect of Satella is contained beneath the Pleiades Watchtower.
In fact, according to Echidna, several security measures were put in place, including sealing Echidna herself in the Witch of Greed's graveyard within her sanctuary. She says this was planned by Volcanic himself since the seals weren't guaranteed to last forever. In fact, even if all the seals were intact, the Witch of Envy has already exercised her power and will outside her prison on several occasions.
The first notable feat is luring Subaru into the world. Each time he Returns by Death, he visits a strange limbo where he sees visions of Satella. These short visits have increased in intensity each time he dies. The witch (though it is not entirely clear which personality has complete control through the seals) also exerts power over him and threatens to kill him or the people around him if he reveals her power. Her power manifests for him as a slowing down of time where he can feel her dark hands grasping his heart and threatening to crush it. Overcoming this fear, she has also killed others (such as Emilia in a loop) if he continues to reveal his Returns by Death ability. She also completely rejected Petelgeuse when he attempted to possess Subaru, stating that Petelgeuse was not the one she loved.
Subaru encounters an aspect of Satella in Arc 4. When he visits Echidna for tea and a chat, he admits that she looks exactly like Emilia. In a timeline of events at Sanctuary, Emilia is possessed by the Witch, though her seals still appear to be in full force. While it has been suggested that there is a strong connection between Emilia and Satella, nothing has been confirmed yet. Satella and the Witch of Envy act as a very powerful force behind the scenes that fuels the mystery of Re:Zero.
Relationships
Echidna - Echidna the Witch of Greed possesses what appears to be Satella's soul (in addition to the five other Sin Witches consumed by Satella). Satella has materialized in Echidna's reality on numerous occasions.
Subaru Natsuki - Satella has declared her love for Subaru on several occasions. In fact, both Satella and the Witch of Envy are in love with him, though it remains unclear why. In a moment of lucidity via Echidna's powers, Satella begs Subaru to kill her, but Subaru proclaims that he will save her instead.
Emilia - Emilia has struggled most of her life to fit the description of the Witch of Envy from legend, but it seems they do in fact share some sort of connection. Few concrete details have been revealed yet, but Satella has been able to possess Emilia before, and she has been mentioned as a potential vessel for Satella on several occasions.

Since most of her existence is shrouded in mystery, Satella's full abilities are still kept secret. However, she has been shown to possess the following abilities:
Authority of Envy - The full capabilities of this weapon are yet to be revealed, though there is speculation that it affects a target at a distance.
Authority of Sloth - Satella uses the Invisible Hand technique to threaten Subaru whenever he mentions his Return by Death ability.
Shadow Control - Satella exerts control over the shadows around her, though it is unknown if this is related to her authority or even another ability. These shadows are capable of destroying life and even taking abstract concepts like thoughts and memories (somewhat similar to the authority of Gluttony).
Time Manipulation - Time seems to stand still for Subaru whenever he is threatened by the Witch of Envy.
