Roswaal L Mathers is the lord of Mathers Manor. Roswaal's body is possessed by his ancestor Roswaal A Mathers, who has possessed the bodies of his descendants for generations.
Roswaal is tall, thin, and has pale skin. He is heterochromic, as his left eye is yellow and his right eye is blue. He has long, dark blue hair, and his face is decorated with purple eyeshadow and lipstick. He wears an outfit comparable to that of a jester, with a miniature black top hat, pink and purple shirt and pants, long black and red boots, and a long, collared black cape lined in red.
Personality
Roswaal is caring towards his servants, especially Rem and Ram, as shown by his concern over Rem's death from an unknown cause in Arc 2. He has a good relationship with the demi-humans and works hard to free the demi-human faction trapped in the Sanctuary. He is quite intelligent, as he was able to figure out that Subaru was capable of time travel after death.
Roswaal is determined to resurrect his former teacher Echidna by any means necessary, even sacrificing his loved ones and even himself.
History
400 years ago, Roswaal became Echidna's apprentice after saving her life by repairing her malfunctioning magic portal. Roswaal was critically injured during a fight with Hector, who was pursuing Echidna at the time.
Roswaal began possessing his descendants in an attempt to resurrect Echidna, after she was killed by Satella None.
Relationships
Echidna - Echidna saved Roswaal's life and taught him how to use magic. Roswaal shows an obsession with Echidna, as he will do anything to resurrect her. Echidna also cares for Roswaal, as she risked her life to save him from Hector.
Beatrice - Roswaal and Beatrice show respect for each other, as they were both close to Echidna 400 years ago. They became closer after the events of Sanctuary during Arc 4 .
Rem and Ram - Roswaal protects Rem and Ram and cares for their well-being. Roswaal saved the twins from their village when it was under attack from a witch cult.
Emilia - Roswaal supports Emilia's participation in the Royal Selection, although at first he only supported her to control Subaru, in order to achieve his goal of resurrecting Echidna.
Subaru Natsuki - Roswaal and Subaru seemed to get along well from their first meeting, with Roswaal appearing to be very grateful to Subaru for retrieving Emilia's badge. However, Roswaal didn't fully trust Subaru and was quick to blame him for Rem's sudden death.
Their relationship changes drastically during Arc 4, when Roswaal's intention to use Subaru's return-by-death ability to resurrect Echidna is revealed, leading Subaru to view Roswaal as an enemy. Following the conclusion of Arc 4, Subaru becomes more tolerant of Roswaal, after Roswaal agrees to help him and Emilia.
Hector - Roswaal considers Hector his rival and began dressing and acting like him after being defeated by him in the past.
SKILLS
Divine Protection of Sorcery - Roswaal's divine protection allows him to master all six elements of magic. He is considered the most powerful mage in Lugnica, his power equaling that of an entire army. He is also exceptionally skilled in the use of magic thanks to his training with Echinda.
