Rod Reiss - Attack on Titan

Rod Riess was formally the true king within the walls and was publicly referred to as Lord Reiss. He is the father of Historia Riess (Krista Lenz ). Rod was the eldest son and was long rumored to be the heir to The Founding Titan which is now held by Eren Yeager . In the series, Rod fought to reclaim The Founding Titan from the Reiss family by having Historia eat Eren to gain power.

Rod Reiss had Eren tied up with the help of Kenny Ackermann to capture both Eren and Historia. His desire was to have Historia drink the serum that transforms her into a Titan and then have her eat Eren to steal his Titan powers. But after Historia defies Rod and breaks the serum into liquid form, he panics and continues to desperately lick the serum off the ground, which transforms him into an Abnormal Titan, which is of a similar type to the Smiling Titan .

Being a major antagonist in the Uprising Arc , he was the real reason Eren Yeager was targeted and so wanted by the Military Police Brigade during the Female Titan Arc , making him the arc's antagonist working in the shadows.

Appearance

Rod is a short, slightly overweight character, 158 cm tall, with a potbelly and a round face. He has short black hair with a slight mustache. He often wears a black vest over a white button-down shirt and black shoes, usually a rich-looking outfit. Rod is not seen in many other outfits, but in one of his flashbacks in Chapter 66 of the Attack on Titan manga , he is seen arguing with his brother Uri Riess at a ceremony and he wears a long-sleeved top with slightly longer but short black hair.

Personality

Rod Riess appears calm, and at times worried and unsure of himself. When Kenny Ackerman caught him and held a knife to his throat, Rod managed to keep his head. But in Chapter 65, when Historia breaks the serum, he panics and desperately licks the liquid serum off the ground to transform into a Titan, a rather irrational decision made by him but in an attempt to devour and take Eren's Titan powers, showing his passion for godhood and being a surviving member of the Reiss royal family reclaiming power. Another reason given for Rod's actions was his apparent love for his deceased daughter Frieda. When Historia rejects the serum, Rod is overcome with anger as he recalls memories of his beloved daughter as she was the only child who agreed to become the next heir. By licking the serum, he supposedly declared that he would be reunited with his family and Frieda.

Power of the Titans

Rod was transformed into a Pure Titan, which is different from a Shapeshifting Titan and does not possess its own will or mind. Much like typical mindless Titans, Rod would fall under the Abnormal Titan type, which is an uncommon type of Pure Titan that we rarely see throughout the series.

The Rod Riess Titan form was the largest Titan ever known at 120 m tall, although as it crawled on its stomach it was actually 40 m tall, but being twice as tall as the Rod Riess Titan. Colossal Titan which is the enormous Titan that pokes its head out over Wall Maria in the Shiganishima Fall Arc . Its body was totally disproportionate, with its torso being very large but its limbs and head not following the size at all, resulting in the Rod Riess Titan being unable to walk on its own two feet and having to crawl and slide on all four limbs. As the Titan dragged itself along the ground, the internal bones and muscles were visible and even its face was like a cross-section (cut in half) due to the friction with the ground, making the brain and eyeholes visible. The Rod Riess Titan was thus one of the most horrifying Titan forms, if not the most horrifying, in the series.

Similar to the Colossal Titan , the Rod Riess Titan generated a lot of heat due to its enormous size and constant regeneration, being covered in masses of steam. Soldiers could not get close to it due to the steam it produced, a very high heat, as trees near the Titan would catch fire instantly.

History

Rod was the eldest son in his family, with a younger brother, Uri Riess. Rod and Uri wished and begged their father to free humanity from the Titans, but their wish was always denied, with Rod never knowing why.

Rod Riess initially had five children with an unnamed woman. The children were Frieda, Urklyn, Dirk, Abel, and Florian. Historia was the sixth child of his lover "Alma," who was a servant, and their relationship was kept secret. Alma and Historia were therefore exiled to a farm rented by the royal family. Rod's entire family was killed by Grisha Yeager, with Rod being the only survivor, having managed to escape, and therefore he turned to his secret daughter, Historia, to take Eren Yeager's Titan powers.
