The question of the cardinal system

She woke up a day later and was no longer aging, no longer needed to eat or drink. Instead, she felt a need to regulate the world. Combined with Quinella's thirst for power, this transformed into a desire to lock the Human Empire into its current state. To do this, she needed to control everyone.

To this end, Quinella reorganized the Human Empire into four empires and designated the local nobles as emperors. Then she conjured the great eternal marble walls between the empires, dividing the Human Empire into four sectors with the Centoria Circle in the middle, and peppered the living area with more insurmountable obstacles to prevent people from traveling and uniting to conspire against her. She continued to add to the Taboo Index with many subsequent editions, and by the time Kirito arrived, it numbered well over a thousand rules describing many small things—all so that people wouldn't try to do anything unexpected, and preferably stop thinking for themselves. She caught and synthesized the dissenters, opening their Fluctlights to conduct experiments and discover its ingredients.

At this point, the Cardinal's error-correcting process began to kick in, as the main process was exerting a direct influence on humans, which was not its original purpose. Each time, the Cardinal tried to kill Quinella, but she resisted.

Quinella began researching how to lock down the error-correction process. She noticed that the moments it surfaced corresponded to her emotional peaks and synthesized, freezing her fear, anger, and most of the other emotions that were causing her problems.

The problem of memory

At the age of about 150, Quinella noticed that her memory often failed her. She would lose consciousness for a split second, she could not recall short-term memories, and she would forget even the simplest commandments of the Sacred Arts on many occasions. Something had to be done about this.

She looked closely at her own Fluctlight and discovered that it had reached its capacity limit. She noticed a 10-year-old nun on the lower levels of the cathedral, who had high control over the system. Quinella invited the nun to her room at the top of the tower and crushed her mind with her own Fluctlight. However, when the two awoke, neither could bear the thought that there were now two of them and they were collapsing. But the nun's Fluctlight broke first, and Cardinal's error-correcting subprocess took over the girl's body, while the administrator remained in Quinella's. The blackout stopped, and Cardinal immediately attacked Quinella. Cardinal was initially winning, but Quinella cleverly used their size difference, and Cardinal had to escape to the magical room of the great library, which Quinella had previously created as a bunker. Cardinal locked himself in and used the time Quinella spent reopening the passage to completely destroy the door first, just in time.

After that, Quinella took care to maintain control of her memory by recycling old or minor memories and remaining motionless, with her eyes closed, to avoid new ones. She also protected herself by synthesizing her former test subjects, the Taboo Breakers and the winners of the Four Empires Unity Tournament, and blocking or adjusting some of their memories to transform them into her slaves, the Integrity Knights. All her activities were now delegated, so she continued to hibernate except during scheduled hours.

The Disappearance of Quinella

Alice, Eugeo, and Kirito fought Quinella for a long time, and she was ultimately mortally wounded. Quinella decided to stay alive by traveling to the real world before time. She activated the hidden console connected to the real world. She started the transfer and began rising into the air in a pillar of light. She spoke to Kirito to say goodbye, but in the final moments of her speech, Chudelkin decided to join her and jumped inside, his body exploding in flames. He embraced Quinella, and they were both engulfed in flames and perished.
