Who is Trafalgar D. Water Law? Origins Explained!
Law is from North Blue, and more specifically from the White City. He grew up in the White City. We learn that this city was the Land of Flevence and that its inhabitants contracted a disease, lead poisoning, a poisoning due to a special lead called white Saturn or ceruse, which is very present in the city and which reduces life expectancy.
After leaving his country, the king pretends that lead poisoning is a communicable disease and a genocide, then decimates all the inhabitants, including Law's family. He manages to escape the city by crossing the border, hiding among the corpses. He will join Donquixote Doflamingo's crew, wanting to use the time he has left to live to destroy everything. He will be violently attacked by Doflamingo's mute brother, Corazon. Wanting revenge on him, he stabs him.

To his surprise, Corazon survived and didn't tell his brother. Spending many years with his "new family," he was surprised when Corazon revealed to Baby 5 and Buffalo that he was a D. Corazon then revealed that he wasn't mute and had lied to his crew, as a former Celestial. As a Dragon, Ds are considered demons, and he is in grave danger if Doflamingo finds out. Corazon kidnaps Law, revealing that he is a Marine working for Sengoku and that he infiltrated his brother in an attempt to stop him, promising Law that he will cure his illness.
For a year, they visited hospitals but got nowhere. They then decided to steal the Ope Ope no Mi to treat Law, but they were intercepted by Doflamingo, who killed Corazon while Law fled. He then arrived on Swallow and encountered a mink bear and two thugs attacking him. He separated the three individuals, and the two thugs, who called themselves Shachi and Penguin, liked Law and decided to stay with him, as did Bepo. They thus formed the Heart Pirates crew and began one of the most notorious and well-known pirate careers in the franchise.
What are Trafalgar D. Water Law's powers and abilities?
Law is a formidable pirate who, along with most of his crew, proved resistant to Rayleigh's Haki while almost everyone in the slave auction house fainted. He is also a skilled fighter. He is courageous, having taken the liberty of attacking several Marines at close range on the Sabaody Archipelago, despite being a long-range fighter.
While on the Sabaody Archipelago, the Kid Pirates and the Heart Pirates were attacked by a Pacifista. The battle was never seen; however, the Heart Pirates reappeared during the Marineford arc, suggesting that they were able to defeat the Pacifista or at least escape it.
Trafalgar Law proves to be a very capable and opportunistic leader; despite being a former Supernova and a skilled pirate captain, Law is considered one of the most powerful pirates of his generation and is also the only one to have remained in the second half of the Grand Line, for at least a few months, rather than venturing into the New World, due to his cautious approach.
After a two-year time skip, Law has become so powerful and infamous that even the G-5 Marines, renowned for their cruelty, are deeply afraid of him. Before becoming a Corsair Captain by bringing 100 pirate hearts to the World Government, Law had acquired a higher bounty than Luffy, further proof of his power.

He managed to defeat Vice Admiral Smoker, who possessed a Logia-type Devil Fruit, without seriously injuring him. It is also said that in the deal between Caesar and Law, Law is more powerful than Caesar. Furthermore, he managed to defeat Vergo, a very powerful fighter, and was even able to counter the attack of a marine admiral (Issho).
In addition to his Devil Fruit, Law possesses enough physical strength and tactical skills to face Smoker on equal terms. While Caesar acknowledges the strength of the Yeti Cool Brothers, they acknowledge that they were not powerful enough to face Law, who dispatched one of them with disconcerting ease. Law possesses very high endurance, having regained consciousness despite being beaten in front of Vergo and despite having lost his heart for a while.
Law also possesses great physical strength in the anime, as he was able to compete with Luffy (controlled by Breed) without his Devil Fruit powers. However, he was defeated by Donquixote Doflamingo, his former captain, who took care of him without much difficulty and left Law in a very bad state.
However, he has suffered many attacks in the Dressrosa Arc and is still standing and alive while some would have died, meaning he is indeed very durable. On top of that, he was able to defeat Trebol, one of Doflamingo's crew members with ease that is a testament to his strength, he even managed to cause Doflamingo a serious injury with his most powerful attack.
What is Trafalgar D. Water Law's Devil Fruit?
Law possesses the power of a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, the Ope Ope No Mi, which allows him to create a spherical area of light blue aura. As Smoker says, after eating this Devil Fruit, Law becomes a "man-modifier." In this area, he is able to separate and spatially move anything and everything. With his powers, he is able to give the impression that he can quickly slice people into pieces from a distance with his sword.
He can also join the separated parts together as he sees fit, such as slamming someone's head against a barrel. People separated by this ability are not killed and can still feel their separated parts, no matter how far apart they are (much like Buggy separates himself using the powers of the Bara Bara no Mid fruit).
The effect persists even after Law deactivates his power. The separated pieces can be reassembled, even by someone other than Law. He can make people and objects within his sphere swap places, as he did with Jean Bart and Bepo to protect the latter from a Pacifista; for example, he can exchange pistol bullets for snowflakes contained within the sphere to protect himself.
After the timeskip, he can also swap the personalities of the people in his "Room" with the "Shambles" attack. He managed to eliminate Vergo, who had coated his entire body with Busoshoku no Haki, and at the same time, eliminate the factory that produces the SAD embedded in the mountain.
The technique's weakness appears to be its energy consumption; Law has stated that each time he uses his Devil Fruit, his body becomes exhausted. This ability also appears to require him to make hand gestures in order to focus the effects on his victims. The extent of this ability remains unknown.
He also appears to be able to create a small area, encircling just the underside of his hand, as seen when he was ready to fight alongside Eustass Kid against a Pacifista. This technique is not yet known. In the opening credits of One Piece Gigant Battle, he is seen creating a small area around his body to protect himself from attacks. With Ope Ope No Mi, he can grant eternal life through "Operation Youth" in exchange for his own life.
What does Trafalgar D. Water Law look like?
Law is an extremely laid-back person, almost always seen smiling (deceptively). He often has a cheeky attitude towards other pirates, which has led to him being labeled a dangerous individual by the World Government. For example, he casually asked X Drake how many people he had killed in his very first appearance, and did not hesitate to give the finger with a smile to provoke Eustass Kid, the most wanted and one of the most dangerous supernovas in the Sabaody Archipelago.
However, he hates taking orders, as evidenced by his frown and annoyance after Kidd asked him and Monkey D. Luffy to stay back while he held off the attacking Marines. He is, however, able to recognize when he and his crew are in grave danger, and he is not averse to forging alliances with his rivals to survive.
He speaks in a politely sarcastic manner and usually refers to others as "Sir" or "Madam," described in the Japanese language by adding certain honorific suffixes like "-san." He appears honorable enough to refuse to take credit for others. This is shown when he replies to Jean Bart that half of his gratitude also goes to Luffy when the former slave offers his gratitude.
Elsewhere, Law displays a more competitive side in the anime, where, along with Kid and Luffy, he engages in a childish debate over who would take care of the Marines stationed outside the Slave Sale House when they were due to leave. However, he doesn't seem as eager to reach the New World as the other Supernovae and their crews.
Thinking that One Piece will always be there anyway, while the other crews fight amongst themselves, and that he must steal the "right" throne. A reference may be to Emperor Kaido, whom he and Luffy are targeting. This caution proved to be to Luffy's advantage, as Law was one of the few people who knew what really happened to the Straw Hat captain after the war at the top of Marineford.
Law also seems to have a sense of honor (or at least respect for those he considers potential rivals). This is shown when he appears at Marineford and claims to want to help Luffy, as he would be "damned ashamed" to see his future enemy die there. This is a rather stark contrast to what most people think of him since Scratchmen Apoo claimed that Law was infamous for his cruelty. Law is also very direct and blunt when responding to people.
