Who is Monkey D. Dragon?

Dragon's backstory remains largely unknown, except for the fact that he was born in the Kingdom of Goa. It's unclear why he left Luffy in the care of his grandfather Garp instead of taking care of him himself, though it was likely to protect him. At some point, he created the Revolutionary Army, becoming its leader and gaining more and more support over the years.

Ten years before the start of One Piece, Dragon returned home to the Goa Kingdom after hearing about the citizens' plan to destroy Gray Terminal to give the World Nobles who would arrive at that time a better view. After witnessing the pain of his own people through Sabo, Dragon enacts a "plan" to save the people and embarrass the government, which involves creating a holocaust to allow the people of Junk Mountain to escape.

Due to his actions, the Nobles simply noted that the charred remains of the mountain fire were less numerous than expected. Dragon saved Sabo, who had been attacked by a World Noble, sinking his ship and nearly drowning him, by grabbing his hand and helping him out of the water, lifting him up and carrying him to his ship so he could be rescued.

Monkey D Dragon Saves Luffy from Smoker

His fellow revolutionaries treated his injuries and took him with them to Baltigo. After Sabo recovered, he decided to join the revolutionaries, later becoming second-in-command. His first appearance was in Loguetown, where he saved his son, Luffy, from Captain Smoker of the Navy. At that moment, a gust of wind hit Loguetown, blowing away Luffy, Smoker, and Buggy the Clown.

On Baltigo, Dragon was observing and pondering Luffy's new bounty when one of his men tried to tell him that Luffy was actually Garp's grandson. However, Dragon interrupted him and he left the room. On the castle balcony, he declared that the true nature of the world would be revealed and that he would meet Luffy again.

After Whitebeard's death and the liberation of Tequila Wolf's slaves, Dragon expressed his desire to see one of them—Nico Robin. Also after the Battle of Marineford, various revolutionaries asked Dragon if he was really Monkey D. Luffy's father, as the newspapers claimed. Dragon casually confirmed this, much to the surprise of his subordinates.

Later, Dragon informs Ivankov that one day they will have to gather the revolutionary leaders scattered across the world. Dragon then tells Ivankov what happened with Kuma. Two years later, Dragon was shocked by the disappearance of the Don Quixote Pirates, as well as the destruction of the illegal arms trade, stating that the World Government would not let this happen.

Koala then tells him about the iron liquor ore they found in many of the stolen weapons and asks him to summon all the leaders of the Revolutionary Army. While news of what happened on Dressrosa with the Straw Hat Pirates spread throughout the world, in Baltigo, Dragon, Koala, and Sabo were looking at their new reward posters.

Sometime later, a newspaper reported Blackbeard's attack on Baltigo, the revolutionaries' base. During the assault, the base was destroyed, but Dragon's location and the fate of the revolutionaries remained unknown. The revolutionary army managed to escape Baltigo's destruction by moving its base to Momoiro Island. While they waited for the army commanders to arrive, Dragon spoke to Sabo to finalize the plan to declare war on the World Nobles during the Levely.

After the Levely, Dragon is seen with several revolutionaries reading terrible news about Sabo. Faced with the general commotion, Dragon pleaded with his subordinates to confirm the news themselves. After announcing that Sabo was still alive, Dragon flew into a rage, declaring that if he was truly the one who killed King Nefertari Cobra, he would not forgive him. He asked Kuma if he saw what happened, but received no response.

Is Monkey D. Dragon Luffy's father?

Luffy is Dragon's son. Like his own father, Garp, Dragon seems to have high expectations of Luffy. Although he has yet to personally introduce himself to Luffy, Dragon approves of, or at least does not condemn, his son's actions. He showed up in Loguetown to see Luffy off to the Grand Line and prevented Smoker from capturing his son. This incident shows that he cares about Luffy's well-being, even though he likely had no part in his upbringing. Even after the revolutionaries discovered their family ties, Dragon calmly confirmed this.

Is Monkey D. Dragon proud of Luffy?

The father seems very proud of his son, as he has caused a lot of trouble for the World Government, and looks forward to the day they meet face to face. His unusual habit of standing facing the East Blue (where he left Luffy) apparently signifies that he misses his son. When he was informed of Luffy's second invasion of Marineford, he decided to focus on his own goals, as he felt Luffy was old enough to take care of himself.

He appears to keep up with his son's news, as shown when Sabo updated him on Luffy's progress after the Dressrosa incident. As news of the Straw Hats' success on Dressrosa spread worldwide, Dragon was seen looking at his son's new bounty poster. He also kept up to date with Luffy's exploits in Totto Land.

Is Monkey D. Dragon related to Gol D. Roger?

There is no direct relationship between Roger and the Dragon family. Roger met and was a temporary ally of Dragon's grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, but the Monkey family is not directly related to Roger. Now, Roger did have a son, later Portgas D. Ace, who would become Luffy's sworn brother, but their connection did not establish a direct blood link between the families. Additionally, some suspect that the D. in their names is a sign of relationship, but this remains unproven, as we will explain later. As it stands, Dragon and Roger may be connected in some way through the Will of D., but not directly related.

How powerful is Monkey D. Dragon?

Monkey D. Dragon is the leader of the Revolutionary Army and has complete control over the organization. It has been hinted that Dragon could be an incredibly powerful individual; the World Government dubbed him "the world's most wanted man" and greatly feared the possibility of him rebelling against them alongside Whitebeard, who has become a powerful threat in his own right. He is also the son of the legendary sailor Garp and the father of Luffy, a notorious pirate.

A proof of his great power is that he trained Sabo, the second in command of the revolutionaries, who, as a child, was already a strong fighter, achieving thanks to his training that years later, Sabo was able to be at the same level as Fujitora, the admiral of the Naval Headquarters.

When Sengoku told everyone about his relationship with Luffy, most people were stunned, including Gecko Moria, then a member of the Seven Warlords, and members of the Whitebeard Pirates, very powerful people under the command of Whitebeard, the most powerful pirate. This reputation was enough to make Luffy considered a potential threat in the future.

He has powerful subordinates like his commander Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, who are comparatively lower in rank, except for his second in command, Sabo, who was only able to fight Burgess and Diamante, who worked as commanders for other fearsome pirates, before eating the Mera Mera no Mi, which greatly increased his power, bringing his boss's power to a level similar to that of an emperor.

Ivankov comments on Luffy's will to live and his inordinate power and that it simply helps prove the idea that he is indeed Dragon's son, implying that Dragon has a similar will. When Dragon arrived in Goa, people noticed that there was extra wind that day, similar to the time it didn't snow for an entire day on Drum Island due to Portgas D. Ace's presence. It is also notable that every time (aside from the Revolutionary Army headquarters) that appears, a storm is either coming or already there.
