One Piece: What Are the SMILE Fruits & How Many Are There?

Every One Piece fan knows what a Devil Fruit is, and most fans know that they are divided into Paramecia-, Logia-, and Zoan-type Devil Fruits, depending on how they affect the user. But there are also SMILE Fruits. WHICH Fruits? Yes, SMILE Fruits! SMILE Fruits are a group of artificial Devil Fruits, and in this article, we'll tell you what they are and how many there are.

SMILE Fruits are actually artificial Zoan Devil Fruits created using SAD. Donquixote Doflamingo and Caesar Clown created these fruits, but they were later taken and used by the Beast Pirates, which makes sense given their name. So far, the series has introduced us to a total of 46 SMILE Fruits.

In the rest of this article, we'll tell you everything you need to know about the SMILE Devil Fruits. We'll tell you a little about that era and then how many there are and what they are. Be aware that there may be spoilers in this article, so be careful how you approach our text if you're not fully up-to-date on what's happening in One Piece.

SMILEs are artificial Devil Fruits that transform humans into human-beast hybrids.

The SMILEs sold by Doflamingo were obtained from SAD, a substance that only Caesar Clown can synthesize by mixing the inherited genetic factors of various animals. It was produced in Punk Hazard and transported to Dressrosa on tankers; it was used in the SMILE factory to create artificial Devil Fruits. Upon ingestion, inherited genetic factors alter the consumer's body to give them the characteristics of a specific animal. Kaido purchased over 500 of them, forming a formidable army at his service.

Due to the Tontatta dwarves' great skill in cultivating all types of plants and their extreme naiveté, they produced SMILES convinced that they were being used to cure their princess Mansherry. Despite their abilities, only one in ten fruits became a functioning Devil Fruit, while in defective fruits, the ability to transmit adverse effects persisted even if they were bitten only once.

All the fruits that became SMILE were red apples, leaving their flavor unchanged, so they didn't have the unpleasant taste of common Devil Fruits. Owners of these fruits, like the Beasts Pirates' Donors, can only partially transform into a specific animal and cannot choose which body part to transform into.

Furthermore, those with the head of a sentient animal on their body are no longer able to reverse the transformation. They bear the weaknesses common to Devil Fruits, and their owners can suffer the effects of the Kibi Kibi Devil Fruit; those who eat the defective fruits only suffer side effects and lose the ability to display expressions other than a smile. No medication can cure these effects. Since hereditary genetic factors can only be extracted from living animals, it is impossible to create smiles that allow transformation into mythological or extinct animals.
