One Piece: Nico Robin Hasn't Awakened His Devil Fruit Yet! Here's Why!

Nico Robin is an amazing character in One Piece in many ways. She's intelligent, a great researcher, a loyal friend, and very useful in battle. Nico Robin is the owner of the Hana Hana no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the owner to reproduce body parts like sprouting flowers. This article will focus on Nico Robin's Devil Fruit powers, as we'll explain why she hasn't awakened her Devil Fruit yet.
Nico Robin is the owner of the Hana Hana no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows her to project parts of her body off of various surfaces, such as a plant. Although she is quite proficient with it and has demonstrated the ability to use many of its powers, Nico Robin has yet to awaken her Devil Fruit. In fact, only a small number of Paramecia-type fruits have been awakened so far, and Nico Robin's isn't one of them. However, given that she is one of the protagonists of the series, there's a good chance we'll see Nico Robin's awakened Devil Fruit form later in the series.
The rest of this article will focus on Nico Robin and her powers and abilities, including her Devil Fruit. The Hana Hana no Mi is an interesting Paramecia-type fruit, and Nico Robin has demonstrated an admirable level of skill with it. However, she hasn't awakened it yet, and the rest of this article will delve deeper into the whole issue. Of course, some spoilers may be present, but this article won't be discussing new events, so it won't contain the usual amount of spoilers like some of our other articles.
No, Nico Robin still hasn't awakened her Devil Fruit, but that doesn't mean she won't!
Nico Robin, aka "The Devil's Child," is the archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates. Nico Robin has been wanted since the age of eight, when she was recognized as the last of the Ohara demons, earning a bounty of 79,000,000 Berries. She is the daughter of Nico Olvia. She was introduced as the vice president of Baroque Works, known as Miss All Sunday, and was the right-hand man of that organization's leader, Sir Crocodile. Robin is searching for the Rio Poneglyph in order to uncover the "true history" of the Void Century, as she is the last person on earth who knows how to read poneglyphs. She is the seventh member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
We've introduced her a bit, even though she doesn't need an introduction per se, but we had to at least talk about this great character. Nico Robin is truly one of the best characters in the series, and we're not just saying that because she's popular, but because she has a truly awesome story. And while we'd love to tell you more about her here, we'll focus on her powers and abilities, especially her Devil Fruit, the Hana Hana no Mi.
The Hana Hana no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows those who eat it to create unlimited copies of their body parts on any surface, as well as a copy of their own body. What is created exists until the user decides otherwise, and when it disappears, the created parts dissolve into flower petals. This fruit was eaten by Nico Robin and is shaped like a pink flower and is covered in characteristic markings all over its surface.
The fruit grants the ability to create numerous copies of body parts on any surface, other than the Sea Stone, that the user is aware of, including their own body or in the air. This allows the user to take on multiple opponents at once. They can also create a copy of themselves, complete with clothing. Since the fruit user is the only one who knows where these new parts will appear, there is also the advantage of surprise. As Robin herself reveals to Pell, her strength and speed count for very little against her, as she can overpower her opponent in seconds.
However, the fruit has no shortage of weaknesses: the biggest one is that the user feels what they touch with the body parts they create. When they injure it, the damage is transferred to the original body, increasing its vulnerability for each part created. Limbs cannot grow where there is not enough space and cannot move from where they sprouted, except for the full body copy, which can walk normally.
The strength of each limb is the same as that of the user's real arms; one way to overcome this limitation is to grow multiple limbs in a row to multiply the applied force. Keeping this ability active requires a lot of effort and concentration, which would disable the power if failed. Finally, this fruit has all the typical weaknesses of all Devil Fruits. This fruit is used by Nico Robin primarily in combat: it disarms and immobilizes the opponent through submission techniques.
Now that we've explained that part, we can actually explain the awakening of the Hana Hana no Mi. While awakening is a phenomenon best known through Zoan-type fruits, all Devil Fruit types are endowed with it. In the case of Paramecia-type fruits, as Luffy commented, the awakening is such that it provides the user not only with a power boost, but also a transformation of their powers, making them less like a typical Paramecia-type fruit. Generally, this allows them to extend their powers outside of themselves and manipulate the environment with those powers. So far, the following Paramecia types have been awakened:
Devil Fruit | User | Awakening | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Canon Awakenings | ||||
It's Mi | Don Quixote Doglamingo | Uses the ability to transform the environment into chains. | ||
Mochi Mochi no Mi | Charlotte Katakuri | Uses the ability to transform the environment into mochi. | ||
Ope Ope no Mi | Trafalgar D. Water law | Increases the range of his usual powers and abilities. | ||
Jiki Jiki no Mi | Eustache Child | Uses the ability to turn other things into magnets. | ||
Gomu Gomu no Mi | Monkey D. Luffy | Becomes a new fruit with Zoan-type traits. | ||
Non-Canon Awakenings | ||||
Goru Goru no Mi | Golden Treasure | Create a sensory system with the created gold. | ||
Ute Ute no Mi | Bad Gracie | Uses the ability to create weapons from the environment. | ||
Gasha Gasha no Mi | Douglas Ball | Increases the range of his usual powers. |
As you can see, Robin's Hana Hana no Mi is not on this list, and we can confirm that she has not awakened her Devil Fruit. While she has developed many powerful techniques and increased the number of techniques she can use, this is not an awakening, as Nico Robin still cannot manipulate the environment.
Will she do it later? Maybe, considering how much her skills will definitely be needed later in the story, but we don't know what Oda has in store for us yet, so this is just a guess on our part.
