Oden vs. Kaido: Who Won the Fight (And Is He Really Stronger?)
Oden vs. Kaido: Who Won the Fight (And Is He Really Stronger?)

One Piece is an anime that certainly has its share of strong and powerful characters. Kaido of the Beasts is one of these characters, as he is considered one of the strongest characters in the entire series. Although his role has diminished since his defeat by Luffy in Wano Country, he is still a formidable character and ripe for comparison. In this article, we will revisit the fight he had with Kozuki Oden to tell you who won this fight and whether the winner of the fight is truly the strongest fighter.
And even though Kaido won the fight against Oden, it was thanks to a trick, as Oden was about to defeat the Emperor. However, it seems to be a deliberate plot element, as everything we know about Kaido through his fights with Luffy indicates that the Emperor is stronger than Kozuki Oden, so we still have Kaido as the strongest, even though Oden almost defeated him.
The rest of this article will expand on the answer given above, as we'll compare Kozuki Oden and Kaido in more detail. Across several categories, you'll see who is stronger and why our answer is the way it is, meaning why Kaido would, according to our analysis, be able to defeat Kozuki Oden.
Physical powers
Oden was very powerful from a young age, learning to hunt as a child and even defeating his enemies at a young age. His physical abilities were such that simply staying in Shimotsuki Yasuie's quarters caused his room to be destroyed in such a way that it seemed like he was the cause of a natural disaster, according to the daimyo who served him.
Oden possessed enough strength to be able to hold the Moby Dick single-handedly with a chain for three full days despite several simultaneous attacks from giant aquatic animals and collisions with icebergs, even while he slept. He further demonstrated his great strength by being able to hold a large plank on which his nine vassals were placed for an hour to save them from execution, then propel them out of the pot to escape, all while boiling them in oil at 700 degrees.
His strength also gave him great mobility, allowing him to jump incredible distances and run at great speeds. Oden's stamina was also incredibly high, being able to endure the conditions in which he found himself bound in Moby Dick without any real problems, only to be cured a day later, a task his future wife described as "something superhuman."
His endurance was such that he was able to survive for over an hour in boiling oil at a temperature that could kill a person in seconds. His stamina also allowed him to fight dozens of opponents simultaneously, being able to endure the fight for an entire night. His resilience was also demonstrated when he was able to withstand a grenade explosion as if it were nothing.

Thanks to his muscle mass, Kaido possesses enormous physical strength. He has managed to capsize nine giant prison ships. Kaido is powerful enough that his scream alone causes visible damage to the area around him. One of Kaido's greatest strengths is his inability to die; in fact, he has suffered seven defeats, been captured eighteen times by the navy or enemies, been tortured over a thousand times, and ultimately been sentenced to death forty times. However, no execution, whatsoever, has worked.
Kaido also jumped 10,000 meters from the sky to the ground, creating a massive shockwave strong enough to sink a nearby ship, and emerged with nothing but a headache; suicide has become a hobby for him. Kaido is as powerful as Charlotte Linlin, being able to fight on equal terms during their fight; like Shanks and Edward Newgate, Kaido and Big Mom were able to split the sky in two with a single blow. So far, no one has been able to stand up to Big Mom, which speaks volumes about Kaido's power.
It's unclear where Oden stands in relation to Kaido, mainly because Oden proved to be a worthy opponent for the Emperor when they fought. However, if we compare Kaido's abilities during his fights with Luffy, we believe he's a bit stronger than Oden.

Devil Fruit
Kozuki Oden is a very powerful character. He is known as one of the most powerful characters in the series and one of the best swordsmen in the series; he is, without a doubt, one of the best, alongside Shanks and Mihawk. Now, Oden's powers and exploits certainly warrant the conclusion that he consumed a Devil Fruit, but is that really true? It isn't, namely that Kozuki Oden has never eaten a Devil Fruit.
This makes Oden one of the very few characters (most notable being Shanks and Zoro) who is extremely powerful, but has not actually consumed a Devil Fruit; most other powerful characters have their Devil Fruits to thank for their individual reputations.

Kaido ate the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Zoan-type Mythical Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into an oriental dragon, similar to Momonosuke, the main difference being that Kaido is gigantic in size in dragon form and seems to control his transformations.
However, he cannot maintain this appearance if he takes too many powerful blows to keep up, such as the ones Luffy dealt him. He is also capable of causing lightning by roaring loudly enough. Kaido has also been shown to be able to lift the entire island of Onigashima and appeared to be able to move it all the way to the Flower Capital.
Ultimately, Kaido simply had to win in this category. The emperor not only possesses a Devil Fruit, but also one of the most powerful, while Oden has never eaten one in his life. It's important to point out that Oden was still a match for Kaido, but Kaido must win the point in this category.

RIGHT
Oden was capable of using all three types of Haki. Oden could use Kenbunshoku Haki, but his level of use is unknown. By the age of eighteen, he had already mastered Busoshoku Haki, known in Wano Country as Ryuo, as he could imbue it into his two swords (Ame no Habakiri and Enma), harden them, and cleanly dissect a monster with a single blow.
He was the only one capable of mastering the Enma sword, known for its ability to drain its wielder's Ryuo. At the age of twenty-nine, Oden was able to collide with Murakumogiri, one of the twelve Saijo O Wazamono. According to Ashura Doji, Oden was capable of using Haoshoku Haki. During his first encounter with Edward Newgate thirty years ago, their sudden clash created the lightning and strong wind that characterizes the clash of two Haki users.
Kaido is proficient in Observation Haki and Armament Haki. He also masters Royal Haki, as demonstrated during his fight against Charlotte Linlin, another user of this Haki.
We don't have much to say here, as both can use all three types of Haki and are quite adept at them. We couldn't really determine who was the more experienced user, so we just decided to split the points here.

Weapons
Oden was an extremely powerful samurai who wielded the legendary swords Enma and Ame no Habakiri, and used a style known as daito nitoryu, or Oden's two-sword style. At the age of nine, he was able to single-handedly take on a group of yakuza from the capital. And at the age of eighteen, he defeated a legendary beast known as the Mountain God in a single attack. According to Kin'emon, his skill was such that he single-handedly defeated Ashura Doji, the most dangerous criminal of the time, along with all of Kuri's subordinates in a single night.
And Tenguyama Hitetsu emphasized that he was the only one capable of dominating Enma. His swordsmanship was of such a high level that he even managed to injure Kaido, causing his characteristic scar, and was close to defeating him without the intervention of Kurozumi Higurashi, a feat that astonished even Kaido's own subordinates, and only twenty years later could this feat be repeated, achieved by his own vassals.
Kaido possesses a Kanabō, which is appropriate for his size; in conjunction with his immense strength, he was able to use it to send one of his subordinates flying out of his lair and onto Luffy.
This is a category where Oden clearly takes the points, and there's absolutely no doubt that the samurai is a more skilled swordsman than Kaido. These skills are what actually helped Oden nearly defeat Kaido.

Kozuki Oden vs. Kaido: Who Wins?
The points actually show a slight difference in favor of Kaido, and we have to agree with that. Kaido is stronger, but not by much. Sure, Oden almost defeated him, but Kaido's true powers were only visible during his fights with Luffy, and that fight showed that Kaido had much more power than what he showed in his fight against Oden. That's why Kaido wins this one in the end. Still, before we wrap this one up, let's recap the fight between the two, one of the most epic fights in the entire franchise.
Twenty years ago, Orochi visited Kuri to demand that Oden let him build factories in the area. Upon hearing this and the massacre of the Hyogoro family, Oden could no longer bear it and cried. In front of his vassals and family, Oden decided to finally attack Kaidou for their happiness. Afterward, Oden set out with his nine most important vassals to defeat the invading pirate.
Before leaving, Oden wrote a letter to his wife, asking her to use her powers to help defeat Kaidou in the future in case he died trying. The two factions met in Udon and began to fight. After recognizing Shinobu (who began to help them) and fending off dozens of Kaidou's subordinates, Oden managed to land a major blow on the pirate.
Immediately afterward, Oden heard a fake Momonosuke asking for help, which Kaidou took advantage of to defeat him with a single blow of his kanabo. After appeasing all his enemies, the Beast Pirates imprisoned Oden and his subordinates, sentencing them to death by boiling in three days. During this time, Oden saw Toki for the last time, to whom he entrusted the swords he had entrusted to him.
Three days later, Oden and his retainers were about to be publicly executed, so Oden asked to be released. After discussing the matter with Kaidou, he agreed to be boiled for an hour before being released. After speaking, Oden quickly entered the boiling pot and began holding his subordinates with a board so they wouldn't burn.
As everyone saw his determination, Oden began to endure the execution minute by minute. Soon after, and to the surprise of everyone present, Oden was able to last the agreed-upon time inside the oil. However, Orochi was not satisfied with this and decided to change the execution method from boiling alive to firing squad at the last minute.
Aware of the threat, Oden threw the Nine Red Scabbards out of the cauldron with the last of his strength, telling them to do everything they could to finally open Wano Country to the outside world. After exchanging a few words with Kaidou, he shot the exhausted and emaciated Oden in the head to end his suffering. Eventually, Oden's body fell into the oil, and the samurai died with a broad smile.
