List of Evangelion Angels
The term "Angels" can refer to a wide variety of things, but it is often used to refer to otherworldly beings with incredible power and destructive abilities that are not yet fully understood by NERV. The destruction of Angels is NERV's primary objective, as the Angels' presumed goal is to destroy humanity as it is commonly known. While the exact meaning of the term "Angel" can vary depending on the context, most Angels share certain general traits, namely AT fields, durability, cores, and a unique wavelength called a "pattern."
AT Land
AT fields are said to be generated by anything with a soul, including humans. However, the AT fields generated by Angels and Evangelion Units are so powerful that they can manifest as both an incredible barrier for defense and, in some cases, a powerful attack method. Normal projectiles and weapons are usually completely blocked by an Angel's AT field, making an Evangelion Unit the least destructive method of destroying an Angel as it can emit an equally powerful field to counter an Angel's.
Sustainability
When an attack successfully passes through an Angel's AT field and hits its target, the damage may be short-lived or simply ineffective. Most Angels possess remarkable regenerative abilities. One particular example is the Angel Israel , who recovered from being hit by an N2 mine in just a few days. As such, the only way to truly defeat an Angel is to defeat its core.
Heart
Both Angels and Evangelion units have a dark red core, though there are some differences between an Angel core and an Evangelion core. An Angel core is said to house the Angel's soul as well as an organ called the S2 engine, which is an Angel's primary power source. Evangelion units lack this S2 engine and must rely on power cords and batteries. While AT fields are a fantastic defense on their own, the cores themselves are also incredibly difficult to break.
Reasons
Magi, the trio of supercomputers at NERV headquarters, has the ability to analyze a living object and classify it under a certain wavelength; Angels are no exception. When NERV suspects an Angel attack, one of the first steps taken is to confirm the Angel's "pattern." Angels are represented by only two designated patterns: blue and orange. A blue pattern means the target is definitely an Angel, while an orange pattern means Magi is unsure how to classify a target. Some Angels are represented by alternating patterns between blue and orange.Leliel and Armisael are two examples of Angels who have an orange pattern at one point or another.
The first angel: Adam
In the Evangelion universe, all life is created by two different types of beings. One bears the "Fruit of Life" while the other bears the "Fruit of Knowledge." Adam bears the Fruit of Life and is the first being to arrive on Earth, but before he can use his Fruit of Life, another life-creator, the Second Angel Lilith, crashes onto Earth, causing Adam's Spear of Longinus to force him into a state of hibernation. In the year 2000, Adam's body would be discovered by an expedition of scientists led by Doctor Katsuragi . This discovery would eventually cause the disastrous Second Impact and, eventually, the appearance of other Angels. All Angels that appear in the original series (with the possible exception of Tabris ) are all referred to as "children of Adam," though the methods by which Adam created these beings are unclear.
The second angel Lilith
Lilith Lilith is another being who can create life, but unlike Adam, she carries the Fruit of Knowledge. Her successful use of her Fruit led to the creation of life on Earth as we know it. In other words, Lilith is the being responsible for the creation of humanity. The ship Lilith used to travel to Earth is called the "Black Moon" and, when discovered, was repurposed as the location of NERV headquarters, which also keeps Lilith stored in its lowest level called the Dogma Terminal. There, Lilith is used as a seemingly infinite source of LCL, which is revealed to be Lilith's physical blood.
The children of Adam
This label refers to the third through sixteenth angels who appear in the original animated series. Each "child" has a very different appearance and set of abilities and can range from a definite physical being to an abstract form that breaks the laws of physics as we know them. The following list is a collection of the Children of Adam:
-
The third angel: Sachiel
-
The Fourth Angel: Shamshel
-
The Fifth Angel: Ramiel
-
The sixth angel: Gaghiel
-
The Seventh Angel: Israel
-
The Eighth Angel: Sandalphon
-
The Ninth Angel: Material
-
The tenth angel: Sahaquiel
-
The Eleventh Angel: Ireul
-
The Twelfth Angel: Leliel
-
The Thirteenth Angel: Bardiel
-
The Fourteenth Angel: Zeruel
-
The Fifteenth Angel: Arael
-
The Sixteenth Angel: Armisael
The seventeenth and final angel: Tabris
Tabris is the angel name given to Kaworu Nagisa. Tabris is a unique case, just like an angel, but he is not a child of Adam, but rather something closer to a reincarnation of Adam . Tabris has the body of a human, but the soul extracted from Adam. He is capable of producing an incredibly powerful AT field, but it is not explicitly stated or indicated whether or not he has a core.
