And while One Piece doesn't really kill off its characters that often, a good number of characters have died so far, and some of those scenes were truly heartbreaking. During the Wano Country Arc, Izou descends to the first basement of the castle after eliminating the opponents on the first floor. He confronts the two CP-AIGISO agents as they continue on, arguing that they need to focus on their top priority, the Straw Hat Pirates. When Tiger returns, Koala is the only one to thank him and at least say goodbye from afar. 18. Mother Carmel

Even though Mother Carmel wasn't exactly the best character, her death is still quite sad. At one point, Mother comes into contact with members of the Cipher Pol. She eventually convinces the men to buy Linlin from her for a huge sum of money. She finally announces that this is her last sale. Shortly after, she is seen celebrating Linlin's birthday with the other children. When Linlin was finished eating, her mother and the other children disappeared, leaving behind torn clothes. From what we know, Linlin's hunger disorder kicked in and she unknowingly ate everyone around her; it's unknown if she realized, at any point, what she had done.

During all of her tea parties, Linlin places a picture of Mother Carmel on the table in front of her. If Carmel's image is damaged, Big Mom enters a psychological crisis, leaving her vulnerable enough to be physically harmed. To this day, Linlin has no knowledge of Carmel's true nature.

17. Return to Don Quixote

Homing, being hunted and feeling in danger, then called Marie Geoise to bring his sons and wife back, which the Celestial Dragons refused. Indeed, for the latter, Homing and his family were no longer Celestial Dragons and had become human. They believed that Homing should accept his choice and renounce his title once and for all. Senor Pink went on a mission with the Don Quixote Pirates. Meanwhile, Gimlet fell ill with a fever. The Russian desperately tried to call him but couldn't find him, and Gimlet died. Upon his return, Pink told him about her son's death and revealed that she knew he wasn't a banker because when he tried to call the bank, they told him Pink had never worked there.

She then ran away from him during a storm until she fell victim to a landslide, which left her in an incurable vegetative state. Despite this, Senor Pink visited her daily in the hospital in the hope that she would get better. One day, Pink put on Gimlet's hat and made him smile, so he started dressing like a baby to make her smile. Shortly after entering the vegetative state, the Russian died.

After interrogating Olvia, Saul, disgusted by the Navy's methods, decided to disobey the World Government and let her escape. One day in Gyoncorde Square, the box containing all the collected signatures suddenly caught fire at the signature area, caused by a human hired by Hody. In the confusion, Otohime was shot in the heart by Hody Jones. (However, the same human hired by Hody would later be accused of the murder.) Her children immediately came to her side.

Fukaboshi swore revenge, but Otohime told him not to be angry with her. With her dying breath, Otohime reminded her sons of their promise to protect Shirahoshi. As she died, she touched her children's little fingers for the last time. Her murder caused widespread unrest on Fish-Man Island.

Even after her death, her ideals endure. She was buried in the Sea Forest. Her daughter missed her funeral because she was imprisoned in the Rigid Tower to protect her from Vander Decken IX. During her ten years in that tower, Shirahoshi wishes to pay her respects, for she lived knowing there was so much unsaid between them.

After witnessing the incidents at the Royal Palace and Acacia, Kyros decides to go there and tells Rebecca and Scarlett to wait for him at the Flower Field. After this, Kyros is turned into a toy by Sugar, causing Scarlett and Rebecca to completely forget about him and his promise to wait for her at the Flower Field.

After watching the entire kingdom burn, Scarlett and Rebecca are persecuted by Diamante and her cronies in an attempt to eliminate any previous royal lineage, but Kyros, already transformed into a toy, saves them. In the final days of Roger's reign, he had acquired more wealth, power, and fame than anyone could have imagined. Although now known as the "Pirate King," Roger was well aware of his own mortality and secretly disbanded his crew. Before his death, he told Rayleigh that he would not die. He also informed Whitebeard that he would die before his execution; it remains unclear whether he was referring to his illness or his surrender to the Marines.

At one point, he met Rouge, a woman who lived in Baterilla and would later become the mother of his son, Ace. Roger eventually turned himself into a Marine and was sentenced to execution. In prison, he asked Garp to take care of his child while he was gone, stating that a child shouldn't be labeled a criminal because of their family ties.

Even though Garp had stated he had no obligation to do so, Roger knew he would do it anyway. Believing it would make an example of him by preventing others from becoming pirates, he immediately scheduled his execution in Loguetown. But just as he was about to die, Roger shouted his famous last words. The executioners' swords fell, and the greatest pirate of all died with a smile.

8. Dr. Calm

Kureha arrives at Hiriluk's house to check if he is already dead, to which she sees Chopper injured and the mushroom on the table, to which she begins to yell at Chopper, asking him what the mushroom was doing there. He replied that he brought it to cure the doctor, but she hits him, telling him that mushrooms are poisonous and that because of them, he will die in a few hours.

Chopper weeps inconsolably at what he has done and runs to find his father, but he is in the castle facing his fate. Wapol had put him in touch with the doctors, completing his ruse by saying that it was just a strategy to kill them and that if the doctors were sick, they would never call Hiriluk. He ends by concluding that he is happy that the doctors are not sick and that the kingdom still has hope for life.

Hiriluk finally declares that a monster will arrive soon and asks not to be harmed as she was his son. Hiriluk reflects on how Dalton cries at his words, knowing there is still hope in humans, as he taught his son. Finally, the doctor takes a drink that activates a bomb that was taken as a last ditch attempt to end the tyrant Wapol. Chopper reaches the hill where the castle stood, but it is too late; the explosion has already taken place.

7. Mother-in-law

When Arlong and his team were in front of his house, Arlong was about to open the door, but before he could open it, Bell-mère came out and pointed a shotgun at his mouth, but he easily disarmed her by telling her what was going on. Arlong explained that she had to pay him for saving her life. But having all his money could only save his life or only the lives of his two daughters.

Since Arlong had no knowledge of her daughters, Genzo advised Bell-mère to pay for her life. Bell-mère gave the money, but she saw Nami and Nojiko walking towards the forest crying, then she told Arlong that she was not paying for herself, but for her daughters, that she would rather die than give up being a mother and have her daughters feel rejected.

Rosinante placed Law in a treasure chest that the Donquixote Pirates had looted, and placed a silencing field with his Calm technique around the boy, allowing him to slip away undetected. Rosinante then allowed himself to be captured as a diversion; the Donquixote Pirates violently attacked him for his betrayal.

Doflamingo then arrived, and after discovering that Law had already eaten the Ope Ope no Mi, he angrily shot Rosinante several times before leaving; Rosinante was unable to shoot Doflamingo as he noted that it was very similar to the cue shot in terms of cuteness. As he was about to die, Rosinante made sure to stay alive long enough for Law to escape undetected.

But before dying, he spoke a few last words to Law, telling him that he was now free of his illness and Doflamingo's. Rosinante then died with a smile. Law then stood by Rosinante's body again and mourned his deceased friend. Law honored Rosinante's last wishes, respecting and admiring him with great respect for saving his life and vowing revenge by destroying Doflamingo.

5. Whitebeard

All the Marines are speechless to see Teach and his new companions. The Blackbeard Pirates escaped from Impel Down, leaving the prison in a state of disrepair, and have broken through the gates of justice, as the Marine guard posts had previously been hypnotized to allow every ship to pass.

Teach admits that everything he did to join the Fleet of Seven was necessary to reach Impel Down and free the prisoners to enlist in his crew, but now he no longer needs it and so renounces the title. Whitebeard attacks Teach with his power and destroys the gallows, but he and his companions are saved.

Blackbeard uses the Dark Dark and prevents his opponent from delivering his most powerful blows, absorbing their effects, but is still injured by the Emperor's naginata and then hit by a shockwave. But Teach survives and orders his companions to kill Whitebeard; all of them shoot him repeatedly and stab him with their repeated blades.

In his final minutes, Whitebeard recalls his last encounter with Roger, during which the Pirate King told him about D.'s will and the mystery surrounding it. He then reveals to Teach that he is not the man Roger expects and that someone will soon arrive who will start a war against the entire world. He confirms that One Piece really exists, after which he dies standing up.

4. Kozuki Oden

After recognizing Shinobu (who began to help them) and fending off dozens of Kaidou Oden's subordinates, he managed to land a major blow on the pirate. Immediately afterward, Oden heard a fake Momonosuke asking for his help, which Kaidou took advantage of to defeat him with a single blow with his kanabo. After appeasing all his enemies, the Beast Pirates imprisoned Oden and his subordinates, sentencing them to death by boiling in three days.

Three days later, Oden and his retainers were about to be publicly executed, so Oden asked to be released. After discussing the matter with Kaidou, he agreed to be boiled for an hour before being released. After speaking, Oden quickly entered the boiling pot and began holding his subordinates with a board so they wouldn't burn.

As everyone saw his determination, Oden began to endure the execution minute by minute. Soon after, and to the surprise of everyone present, Oden was able to last the agreed-upon time inside the oil. However, Orochi was not satisfied with this and decided to change the execution method from boiling alive to execution by firing squad at the last minute.

Aware of the threat, Oden threw the Nine Red Scabbards out of the cauldron with the last of his strength, telling them to do everything they could to finally open Wano Country to the outside world. After exchanging a few words with Kaidou, he shot the exhausted and emaciated Oden in the head to end his suffering. Eventually, Oden's body fell into the oil, and the samurai died with a broad smile.

Having escaped Enies Lobby on the Going Merry, all seemed well in the Straw Hats' world. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived. The Going Merry suddenly dissolved in the middle of the ocean. Fortunately, a Galley-La ship, carrying workers, Iceburg, and others, arrived in time to rescue the passengers aboard the Going Merry.

After leaving Water 7 for Enies Lobby, Iceburg found the Going Merry lying on one of Water 7's shores. The ship then apparently asked Iceburg to repair it. After Iceburg arranged for another voyage, the ship suddenly set out on its own in rough seas, braving the storm that was brewing at the time. He told the Straw Hats this. He also told them that the ship was in a completely irreparable state and should finally rest in peace.

With a heavy heart, Luffy set the ship on fire, giving it a Viking funeral, as he believed the ocean floor was dark and lonely. The Rumbar Pirates visited many places in the Grand Line. Just before reaching the "New World," Captain Yorki fell seriously ill, for which he had to leave the crew, as the doctor did not know the illness that afflicted him and that it would likely be fatal (probably the same one that had Nami, but nothing is confirmed).

Yorki was transferred to the West Blue, and Brook temporarily took over as captain. It was here that he earned (for reasons still unknown) his first bounty of 33,000,000 Berries. Yorki's whereabouts are unknown, but he is believed to be possibly dead. Tragically, upon reaching the "New World," at the Florian Triangle, the Rumbar Pirates encountered a deadly and powerful enemy (as yet unknown), who, in a very dirty move, shot poisoned arrows at them, injuring the medic and killing him immediately.

With the Rumbar Pirates already traveling without a doctor, all the members began to die, including Brook. Before dying, they played one last song, which Brook had recorded on a sound dial, brought from Skypiea by a trader, and which he would bring to Laboon in the hopes that Brook's abilities would work.

1. Portgas D. Ace

Ace collapses to the ground from the wound he received from Akainu. His companions open fire on the admiral to protect him, but to no avail due to his Rogia fruit. The second attempt to hit Ace is stopped by Jinbe, Marco, and Vista, but Akainu doesn't care, as he's sure the pirate is doomed. Luffy begs the Whitebeard Pirates to do something for his brother, but the wound is incurable; even Iva's power can't save his life.

Ace reflects on his childhood and the question that has haunted him his entire life: whether he had the right to be born and live. People said that if Gol D. Roger had a child, he would be tortured and killed for simply existing, and each time Ace beat them violently.

The boy thanks Luffy for loving him and asks him to convey the same message to his companions as well. After that, he dies, as his Vivre Card is completely consumed. Luffy tries to restrain himself, but bursts into tears.
