Kanao Tsuyuri - Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer)

Kanao Tsuyuri (栗花落カナヲ) is a talented young Demon Slayer in the Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) series. A mysterious girl who always smiles calmly, but rarely speaks on her own, and it is often difficult to grasp her emotions. She was first introduced as a quiet girl staring at a butterfly showing no interest or emotion after passing the Final Selection. She learned to use the breathing technique by imitating her peers, quickly learning Total Concentration Breathing, easily surpassing the Final Selection with purely overwhelming combat power. Because of this, she was one of the five to survive the Final Selection. She is the adopted sister of Kanae Kocho and Shinobu Kocho, the latter sister's former tsuguko.

“As long as you give a chance, a person’s soul will open, so don’t worry.”
—Kanae Kocho to Kanao Tsuyuri, Demon Slayer

Appearance

Kanao is a young girl with large, soft eyes and irises that range from pink to lilac. She has long black hair tied back with a butterfly hairpin in a ponytail on the right side. Her bangs consist of straight bangs covering her straight eyebrows and chin-length side bangs that fall above her ears.

She wears a white cloak over her Demon Slayer uniform and a knee-length skirt instead of a hakama. While Kanao reappears after the events of the Entertainment District Arc, her appearance changes when she avoids wearing a white cloak and instead chooses to wear only her simple Demon Slayer outfit. Kanao's hair still appears to have changed color after her fight with Doma, as the tips now turn from black to purple. After the battle, Kanao begins wearing Shinobu Kocho's hairpin instead of Kanae's as the latter is broken following her fight, and she also loses the ability to see out of her right eye as she uses the final form of Flower Breath to defeat Upper Moon.

Personality

Due to her traumatic past, she has an indecisive and quiet personality. She is seen staring at a butterfly, ignoring the other participants during the final selection. Calm and collected, she repressed her emotions to the point of being unable to make decisions for herself. Kanao continued to show no feelings or desires for years. Despite this, after seeing what the demons did to Aoi, Kiyo, and Shinobu's loved ones, Kanao developed a strong dislike for the demons of her own volition. Shinobu initially ordered Kanao to quickly cut off the demon heads without hesitation, as Kanao had no desire of her own. To solve this problem, she uses a coin to decide her path when she is unsure of what to do. When Tanjiro approached her to say goodbye, she repeatedly answered "goodbye" mechanically, and eventually used the coin to decide her fate. Ultimately, however, Kanao still established her own determination to fight. Despite her apparent lack of emotion or ambition, Kanao ignored Shinobu and Kanae's wishes and made the final decision of her own volition, which would mean that her willpower had begun to improve.

Ability

  • Enhanced Sight - Possessing keen eyesight, her vision is at the level necessary to accurately predict attacks based on the subtle movements of an opponent's muscles. She is able to easily dodge attacks and counter during battle. She is able to further enhance her eyesight using a special technique involving concentrated breathing that Kanao uses to further increase her already incredible reaction speed.
  • Vermillion Eye - A unique technique that only Kanao Tsuyuri can perform. A strategy that enhances Kanao's visual acuity by converging blood flow with "full concentration breathing," which stimulates the physical functions of the eyeballs. The opponent's movements tend to be slow when used. Since the intentional over-secretion of chemicals in the brain is pushed into a state of emergency, time itself seems to be prolonged. It is inferred that it is possible to gain the immense advantage of having a more precise attack moment thanks to the ultra-fast reaction achieved by this state. It goes without saying, however, that the pressure on Kanao's optic nerve is also massive, and the blood vessels in the retina widen to the point of bursting, causing the optic disc to become stained vermillion. Because of this, the likelihood of blindness increases proportionally to the time the technique is used.
  • Full Concentration Breathing - She has mastered the ability to remain in complete concentration on her breathing for over 24 hours. Living in the Butterfly Estate with the hashira Shinobu Kocho, she spends most of her time focusing on training.
  • Flower Breath - (花の呼吸) As Shinobu's successor and personally trained by Shinobu and Kanae, she possesses exceptional combat skills. Flower Breath is a style derived from Water Breath.
