Synopsis

Ushio Hinomaru has a dream: to become a sumo wrestler. Unfortunately, he's rather short and very frail. Admittedly, it's a big dream—after all, sumo is a sport where "big" and "heavy" are the hallmarks of success. Nevertheless, this little guy is very combative and, with the help of his admittedly unimpressive school sumo club, he's heading straight for the top!

Background

Hinomaru Zumo is adapted from the manga written and illustrated by Kawada which has been airing in Weekly Shonen Jump since May 26, 2014. The television anime adaptation was announced in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 6, 2018 and will air in October 2018. HIGE DANdism will perform the series' opening theme with Omedetai Atama of Nani Yori singing the ending.

Ushio Hinomaru, a small, frail boy, dreams of becoming a "Yokozuna," the highest rank in professional sumo. A former elementary school sumo champion, Hinomaru joined the high school sumo club with the intention of training to narrow the gap between his frail physique and that of the other wrestlers.

Shinya Ozeki (Voice of: Fukushi Ochiai)

Shinya Ozeki is the captain of the sumo club and, until Hinomaru's arrival, its only member. He may appear shy and prone to tears, but Shinya is always there when it matters most.

Yuma Gojo (Voice of: Kentaro Kumagai)

Yuma Gojo is a brutal and violent boy who mocked the sumo club and even tried to steal the dojo from Shinya. However, after meeting Hinomaru, he decides to join and becomes a dedicated sumo wrestler. As a black belt in karate, he is quite skilled in combat and is also a serious student with excellent grades despite his delinquent personality.

Chihiro Kunisaki (Voice of: Takuya Sato)

Chihiro Kunisaki was previously a member of the wrestling club and was also a national champion. His dream is to go to America and conquer the world of MMA.

Kei Mitsuhashi (Voice of: Ayumu Murase)

Kei Mitsuhashi is a novice sumo wrestler who joined the sumo club because he admires Hinomaru. He is a little shy, but has a brave heart.

Kirihito Tsuji has been friends with Hinomaru since elementary school and joined the sumo club to become as strong as him. He is currently the team's coach.

Reina Gojo is Yuma's younger sister and the vice-president of the student council. She is also one of the leaders of the sumo club and has an unhealthy affection for her older brother.

Chizuko Hori is a shy and introverted girl who is obsessed with Hinomaru because he protected her when she was being bullied by a weirdo. Moved by attending the Inter-High School Championships, she developed an intense interest in sumo and eventually became one of the club's leaders.

Sosuke Kuze (Voice of: Shunsuke Takeuchi)

Sosuke Kuze is a sumo wrestler at Eigadai Affiliated High School and the son of Japan's last Yokozuna, Yamatokuni. Sosuke severely injured an opponent, Shun Kariya, during a bout while in elementary school and was subsequently banned from the ring until the end of middle school.

Shun Kariya (Voice of: Takuto Yoshinaga)

A member of Eigadai Affiliated High School, Shun Kariya was seriously injured by Sosuke Kuze during a fight in elementary school. He is short in stature and considers speed his best technique. He considers Hinomaru an important rival.

Jin Yomoda (Voice of: Noriaki Sugiyama)

Jin Yomoda is the captain of the Eigadai Affiliated High School sumo club. He is a talented wrestler and consistently performs well in individual competitions. He may seem a little lost, but he is a keen observer of his surroundings and excels at analyzing them.

Rion Sawai (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)

Rion Sawai is a member of the Eigadai Affiliated High School sumo team. He has a sharp tongue, but is kind and responsible. Rion is also a gifted student with excellent grades and is able to rationally analyze his opponent even in the middle of a match.

Daniel Stefanov (Voice of: Justin Tomimori)

Daniel Stefanov is a Bulgarian transfer student at Eigadai Affiliated High School who came to Japan out of admiration for the top sumo wrestler Yamatokuni.
