Is Gol D. Roger Related to Luffy?

The legend of One Piece and One Piece also begins with the famous pirate king, Gol D. Roger. And even though many have tried to do so, Monkey D. Luffy seems to be the one destined to repeat Roger's legacy. If you've been following the series, you'll have seen that the two are very similar in many ways and there are many things that connect them. In this article, we'll delve into this, as we'll tell you if Gol D. Roger is related to Luffy, as well as other related things.

As far as is known now, Luffy and Roger are somehow connected, but it remains to be seen if this is a true biological relationship. Luffy and Roger's son, Portgas D. Ace, were sworn brothers, and they both have what is known as the Will of D, which was described as something related to family by Don Quixote Rosinante. The exact nature of their relationship will be explained when Oda fully explains the Will of D.

The rest of this article will focus on Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Luffy, as we'll explain how the two are connected and why they're so similar in many ways. If you're not familiar with the entire story of One Piece, we must warn you that there are spoilers in the following paragraphs.

Is Gol D. Roger related to Monkey D. Luffy?

To answer this question, we'll first retrace Roger's story so you know exactly where he came from. Gol D. Roger was born in Loguetown. According to Monkey D. Garp, Roger grew up in difficult circumstances and, above all, developed a great fear of losing those close to him. Sometime later, in his youth, he met Silvers Rayleigh and was impressed by his ship.

However, Rayleigh explained that he stole the ship to live on because his house had burned down. Considering their meeting a fateful one, he asked Rayleigh to join him. Roger became captain of the Roger Pirates, during which time he embarked on a life of piracy while building his reputation over several decades. Brook alluded to a "rookie" with that name while he was still with the Rumbar Pirates.

Rayleigh meets Roger

Roger and his crew sailed to the New World, where Roger managed to sneak into Charlotte Linlin's territory, Totto Land, and transcribe her Road Poneglyph. 39 years before present, he and his crew reached Lodestar Island, the final island designated by Log Pose. Roger knew that the true final island lay beyond this point and that the Road Poneglyphs gave clues to its location; however, he was unable to read the transcribed text.

About 38 years ago, Roger and his longtime rival, Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, formed a temporary alliance against the Rocks Pirates, which saw the duo battle on God Valley against the crew, including Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, Kaido, and their captain, Rocks D. Xebec. The battle resulted in the crew's disbandment, as people considered Xebec to be Roger's first and most formidable rival.

As you can see, there is no direct relationship between Roger and Monkey's family. Roger met and was a temporary ally of Monkey's grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, but the Monkey family is not directly related to Roger. Now, Roger later had a son, Portgas D. Ace, who is Luffy's sworn brother, but their connection did not establish a direct blood relationship between the families. Additionally, some suspect that the D. in their names is a sign of relationship, but this remains unproven, as we will explain later. As it stands, Luffy and Roger are connected, but not directly related.

Who are Luffy's parents?

Now that we know that Luffy is not related to Roger, who is he related to? Who is Luffy's family? The identity of Luffy's mother has not yet been revealed. His family history initially revealed that he was raised by his paternal grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, but not much is known about his biological parents. And while the identity of his father has been revealed, the identity of Luffy's mother has not yet been revealed.

In episode 314 of the anime, which adapts chapter 432 of the manga, titled "Jack in the Box," it was revealed that Luffy's biological father was none other than the revolutionary criminal Monkey D. Dragon.

Eita Otoya vs. Kenyu Yukimuya

He is the notorious leader of the Revolutionary Army that is attempting to overthrow the World Government. He is the World Government's greatest enemy and is commonly known as the "world's worst criminal." Monkey D. Luffy is the son of Monkey D. Dragon. Like his father, Monkey D. Garp, he seems to have high expectations for Luffy. And although he has yet to introduce himself to Luffy, Dragon still seems to support his son's actions.

He appeared in Loguetown to see Luffy off to the Grand Line and prevent Smoker from capturing him, showing that he cares somewhat for his son's well-being (perhaps to push Luffy to become more mature). Dragon also seems to be very proud of his son due to all the trouble he has caused for the World Government.

What is the Will of G-d?

In the One Piece universe, some people, Pirates, Revolutionaries, or Marines, bear the initial "D." This mysterious initial has been called the Will of D by some One Piece characters. Some people call "D." bearers of the "Natural Enemies of God." While the literal meaning of the middle initial is still unknown, it could be said that all those who bear it share a similar belief in dreams or destiny.

When a D. appears, the global belief is that a series of events will be triggered on a global scale; for better or for worse, as explained by the old saying that the D. always brings storms. The greatest mystery of the D. is that they themselves don't really know what it means. Jaguar D. Saul displays complete ignorance about the D. when Nico Robin asks him what it means.

But, from what we can gather, it seems that the Marines were somewhat aware of the existence of the D.s, like Sengoku, who became interested in Ace because of it. Trafalgar D. Water Law's parents also seemed to have some knowledge of the meaning of the D., believing it prudent to hide the surname from their children. So far, and to our knowledge, Gol D. Roger was the first known D. and the first bearer of the said initial to have discovered its meaning.

On the other hand, they seem able to withstand an incredible degree of pain in combat and only surrender to death when they know there is truly no way to avoid it. Along these lines, another unusual behavior that seems to be common among the D. is that they are seen smiling when they are about to die; seeming to accept death without fear when they can no longer escape it. The reactions of many characters who witness this are either shocked or disbelieving, as it is difficult to imagine anyone not being afraid of dying.
