Garp vs. Blackbeard: Who Would Win in a Fight?
Garp vs. Blackbeard: Who Would Win in a Fight?

One Piece is an anime that certainly has its share of strong and powerful characters. While we usually use Luffy for these comparisons, this one will be a little different. Blackbeard is known as one of the biggest nuisances in the One Piece franchise, and we honestly doubt anyone likes him. Not only is he responsible for the deaths of Ace and Whitebeard, but he also has a very unpleasant personality. On the other hand, Monkey D. Garp, Luffy's grandfather, is known as one of the most powerful Marines in all of history. In this article, we'll compare Blackbeard and Garp to see who would win in a fight.
Blackbeard would win a fight against Garp. Currently, Blackbeard is, thanks to his two Devil Fruits, stronger than Garp. Garp may be physically superior to him, but Blackbeard's two Devil Fruits make him a truly formidable foe who would be able to defeat Garp. On the other hand, a younger version of Garp could certainly defeat a young Blackbeard with a single Devil Fruit.
The rest of this article will expand on the answer given above, as we'll compare Blackbeard and Monkey D. Garp in more detail. Through several categories, you'll see who is stronger and why our answer is the way it is—that is, why Blackbeard would ultimately be able to defeat Monkey D. Garp if they fought head-to-head.
Physical powers
Garp's fists are incredibly powerful. In fact, they are so powerful that one of his punches was able to injure Luffy and make him feel pain, and during the war, he managed to injure Marco in his Phoenix form with a single punch. This is because he is an expert user of haki. Also, his alias "Garp the Fist" is due to this quality and he calls it "Fist of Love."
He claimed to have crushed eight mountains while training to confront Chinjao. In addition to his legendary strength, Garp possesses extreme endurance and an absurd tolerance for pain, as demonstrated when he was attacked by Captain Morgan and yet was able to withstand Morgan's axe cut without issue or pain. This may be attributed to the fact that he was asleep during the incident (he also did not wake up).
He also fell from the execution platform and despite this, he managed to get up with few injuries despite a blow received before the fall which would have also injured him, to the joy and surprise of the other marines who were happy that he was still alive after this fall and still had enough strength to prevent Jesus Burgess from attacking Sengoku while he was fighting with Blackbeard and manage to knock him out and surprise his strength.
Garp has shown to possess incredible speed (possibly surpassing CP9's Soru), as he was able to dodge all the Straw Hats and reach Luffy to wake him up. It is evident that Whitebeard respects Garp's strength, as he mentioned during his conversation with Shanks. It is also worth noting that Garp does not carry any weapons, aside from the cannonballs he throws, implying that he is more likely a hand-to-hand combatant like his grandson.
He is an excellent teacher as he managed to turn Koby and Helmep into competent fighters in a short time and was also selected to be an instructor. He was also the one who trained Luffy and Ace, making them strong enough to go off on their own. Gol D. Roger has stated that he and Garp nearly killed each other on several occasions. The fact that Garp can fight Gol D. Roger implies that he is one of the strongest characters in the series.
Teach has incredible endurance, as shown when he took an Earthquake blow from Whitebeard squarely to the face and neck without losing consciousness, especially since his Devil Fruit allows him to take even more damage. He also withstood a direct hit from the Murakumogiri without taking any lasting damage and was able to withstand a kick to the head from the supernova Jewelry Bonney.
During his fight with Ace, he was hit in the chest by two fire spears but was able to recover after extinguishing the flames (albeit with the help of his logia powers). His ability to withstand two powerful attacks—one from Sengoku in his daibutsu form and the other from Luffy using Gear Second—while only sustaining minor injuries each time is another illustration of his incredible endurance.
Teach also possesses incredible physical strength, which is demonstrated when he severely injures both Ace and Luffy with a single blow, sending them both crashing back with incredible force and distance and even drawing blood (though both times he did not allow them to use their powers). Ace is fire and Luffy is rubber, but Teach still managed to injure them both.
This is actually a category in which Garp is far superior. We're not saying Teach is physically weak, but Garp has so much power that he could blast even the extremely durable Teach into oblivion with his fists. This is why Garp takes first place.

Devil Fruit
Monkey D. Garp is one of the few characters who has such a high power level but doesn't possess any Devil Fruit powers. Monkey D. Garp has never eaten a Devil Fruit in his life, so ultimately, we have nothing more to say regarding this category; at least when it comes to Monkey D. Garp.
Blackbeard ate the Yami Yami no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit. This fruit allows the user to transform into, control darkness, and absorb anything they wish. It is a very powerful fruit that can negate the power of another Devil Fruit, much like the Sea Granite. It can pull any Devil Fruit holder into a vortex, allowing it to strike them even if the enemy fruit is a Logia-type fruit.
It's easy to understand why Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, came to Whitebeard to tell him that Ace shouldn't go looking for Blackbeard. After the events of Impel Down, Blackbeard went to Marineford and killed Whitebeard, who was already seriously injured. After killing Whitebeard, he hid himself and Whitebeard's body under a sheet.
He emerges with the power of tremor, making him the wielder of two Devil Fruit powers, a feat considered impossible. It is still unknown how he managed to steal it, nor do we know how Teach can wield both powers. According to Marco, this is due to a peculiar and abnormal structure of his body.
Since Garp doesn't have a Devil Fruit, while Blackbeard has two in total, we have to give this point to Blackbeard. But even if Garp had a Devil Fruit, he would still lose in this category because Blackbeard is the only known possessor of two Devil Fruits.

RIGHT
Garp is able to use Haki because he is a Vice Admiral. Garp has the ability to use Observation Haki. Dr. Fishbonen advised Koby to ask Garp for help mastering Observation Haki when he awakens it, stating that he has enough knowledge to help others. Garp has proven to be a very skilled user of Armament Haki, as evidenced by his multiple injuries to Luffy despite the latter's rubber body.
Thirty years ago, he was able to cover his fist with haki, allowing him to overpower and even crush Chinjao's haki-enhanced drill-like head, demonstrating his superiority over an already quite strong Armament Haki user. He struck and injured Marco during the Battle of Marineford, despite Marco being in his regenerative Phoenix form. Garp hits Luffy in the head with a technique known as Ai Aru Kobushi, which is a simple but effective strike combined with Armament Haki to injure him. It has been established that he also applied it to Ace when he was a young boy.
The teacher can use two of the three types of Haki. He can use Observation Haki, as seen when he was able to measure Luffy's strength and latent Haki twice. Teach can also use Armament Haki, but his prowess is unknown.
There's no doubt that Garp's Haki techniques are far superior to Blackbeard's. Blackbeard relies primarily on his Devil Fruit powers, so he's lacking in most other categories, including this one. That's why Garp wins this one.

Weapons
So far, Garp has been seen throwing cannonballs (including a gigantic one). His fists could also be considered a weapon.
When he was younger, Teach used claws on his right hand, seen with larger claws, and now also on his left hand when the Whitebeard Pirates began protecting Fish-Man Island. He was seen carrying a flintlock when he delivered the killing blow to Whitebeard along with the rest of his gang, and he also has three pistols strapped to his belt.
His accuracy with them is not fully demonstrated, as he was only seen emptying his ammunition into a critically wounded Whitebeard at point-blank range, an attack the Emperor resisted for a short time.
As for this category, the lack of information related to Garp's weapon prowess forced our hand here, so we had to give the last point to Teach. But considering how clumsy Luffy is with weapons, this could easily be a family trait.

Monkey D. Garp vs. Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard): Who Would Win?
And now, let's move on to the most important and interesting section of our article: the analysis. Here, we'll take what we've discovered about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would help them (or not) in their fight against each other. Let's continue.
If you remember our comparison between Kaido and Blackbeard, you'll know that we had a very similar situation back then. The difference was that we had to declare Blackbeard the winner, even though Kaido had almost all the points on his side. Here, we're dealing with a tie, but regardless, the winner would still be Blackbeard, and for the same reasons as back then.
Namely, Blackbeard was never a character without his Devil Fruits. Sure, he had exceptional stamina (and with that much fat, it's not even surprising), but he wasn't exactly skilled with weapons, nor was he a great Haki user. Sure, Teach was more powerful than most of the characters in One Piece, but he wasn't in the top tier if you took away the Devil Fruits. His initial Devil Fruit, the Yami Yami no Mi, was powerful enough to put him in the top tier, but when he also stole Whitebeard's Devil Fruit, he automatically became one of the most powerful characters in the series, despite the fact that he's still a coward who avoids any fight he isn't sure he can easily win.
If you took away his Devil Fruits, Blackbeard would be an easy target for Garp. The guy is a true powerhouse and would kick Blackbeard's ass in no time, without much trouble. But, since we know Blackbeard wouldn't fight fair and would use his Devil Fruits, we can just declare him the winner of this duel.
