Great Holy Grail War
History
At the beginning of World War II, a Holy Grail War was attempted in Fuyuki City, but the ritual failed due to the destruction of the Lesser Grail. Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, a mage working with the Nazis, later found the Greater Grail and stole it with the help of the German army. At that time, Amakusa Shirou Tokisada was summoned as ruler but remained in the world and later became a member of the Church. By transporting the Greater Grail to Germany, Darnic managed to steal it for himself and hid it beneath Yggdmillennia Castle in Romania for 60 years while he acquired mana.
During his preparations, Darnic disseminated information about the ritual to create a Holy Grail War worldwide, and mages began using this information to create smaller-scale Holy Grail Wars around the world. Once his preparations were complete, Darnic announced the Yggdmillennia's secession from the Mages' Association to form their own organization. Once the Mages' Association learned that Darnic was in possession of the Greater Grail, they sent 50 mages to retrieve it, but all but one were killed. The sole survivor was able to activate a reserve in the Greater Grail, thus sparking a Great Holy Grail War. The largest Holy Grail War ever seen, it pitted two teams of seven Masters and Servants against each other, with the winning team then battling each other until only one pair remained to claim the Grail.
System
The Great Holy Grail War was activated through a reserve system within the Greater Grail. Although it required a large amount of energy, the war was able to be activated thanks to the immense amount of mana that had been collected by the Greater Grail over the years, as Darnic had kept it hidden, and because Trifas had the largest concentration of magic lines in Romania. Due to the abnormal nature of the war, the Grail summons a 15th Servant, Ruler, to oversee the war and ensure its integrity is maintained. Ruler is not part of either faction and is summoned to be an impartial arbiter ensuring that the rules are followed. The Great Holy Grail War takes place in Fate/Apocrypha None
