Evangelion in 2020
On June 27, 2020, the long-awaited fourth film in the Evangelion franchise's tetralogy , Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0+1.0, will be released in Japanese theaters. The film, which not only concludes the tetralogy, also features a completely different ending from the series the films are "rebuilding." Unlike the first three films, which were simply a reinterpretation of the series in a new light, the fourth film will have an entirely new ending, an alternative to the original series, and promises to give fans something completely different to talk about.
Previous movies about the reconstruction of Evangelion
In 2007, Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno released a movie poster to announce that he would be revisiting the series in four films over the next few years. This revamp was to be called "Rebuild of Evangelion." The first three films would be alternate reimaginings of the original 26-episode series, while the fourth would be a completely different ending to the series, giving longtime fans of the 26-episode series something new to look forward to. Anno is the director, producer, and screenwriter.
The year before the films were announced, Anno founded his own animation studio, Khara, Inc. Here, he would have complete creative freedom to create the world he wanted for the upcoming films without stepping on the toes of other creators and their projects. Anno brought back many key creators from the original series, including his assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki, character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto , storyboard artist Shinji Higuchu, and music composer Shiro Sagisu .
The first film is titled " Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone " and was released in Japanese theaters on September 1, 2007, and in North American theaters on November 17, 2009. (Each film took a few years to be released in the United States after the initial Japanese releases.) The second film is " Evangelion: 2.0 You Can't (Advance) " and was released in Japanese theaters two years later on June 27, 2009, and in North American theaters on March 29, 2011. The third film is titled " Evangelion: 3.0 You Can't Do It Again " and was released in Japanese theaters on November 17, 2012, and in North American theaters on February 2, 2016.
Evangelion Production History: 3.0+1.0
The fourth and final film will be released on June 27, 2020, and its current title is "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0." Fans have speculated that this title could be a simple stylistic choice, tetraphobia (fear of the number 4), or even have a deeper meaning that audiences won't truly understand until the film's release.
Originally, the fourth film was supposed to be released to Japanese audiences at the same time as the third film in 2012, or a few years later in 2015, but the release was cut short when Anno fell into a state of depression and, when addressing the public, announced that he could not work on another film at that time. However, he was later approached to direct the 2016 "Shin Godzilla" film series, and after filming on that series was completed, it was announced that production was underway on the fourth and final film in the Rebuild series. All of this led to an eight-year gap between the third version of the original story and the fourth, a completely different ending to the story.
Some known facts about Evangelion 3.0+1.0
-
The first ten minutes of the film were screened in Paris in July 2019. This choice of location for the short release could be due to the fact that parts of the film take place in Paris. Little is known about the film so far, but there are a few facts that fans are aware of.
-
Not much time has passed since the end of Evangelion 3.0 to the beginning of Evangelion 3.0+1.0. In fact, it was probably only a few hours.
-
Many non-pilot characters wear plug-suits and helmets in the film. This is due to the Parisian setting, which is said to have a "surface converted to a Category 6 core" and the oxygen density is -3, and the L-barrier is high. The plug-suits and helmets help protect the characters from these effects. It is also implied that the L-barrier generates the corrosive material and unbreathable air near Tokyo-3 and Paris.

It is possible that a new hybrid Evangelion will be introduced between Unit 02 and Unit 08 (Evangelion Unit 8+2). In the most recent trailers, Mari is seen piloting a half-pink, half-red Evangelion, which could lead to another Evangelion Unit with a dual-input port.
-
There are three new Evangelion enemy types in the film, all featuring Lilith's mask and the new NERV logo from Evangelion 3.0. The new Eva units are: Eva 44A (read "4 two A"), Eva 44B (read "4 two B"), and Eva 4444C (read "4 four C").
The release of the highly anticipated film will answer all the questions fans had and offer fans of the films and the series a different story than before.
