Is Big Mom a giant in One Piece? (& What is her race?)

Big Mom, whose full name is Charlotte Linlin, was one of the four emperors in the manga One Piece. She is the captain of the Big Mom Pirates and one of the four emperors ruling the New World, as the only female member. She is also the matriarch of the very large Charlotte family, whose many children make up the infrastructure of her crew. In this article, you will find out what race Big Mom belongs to, that is, if she is a Giant, due to her size.
Although she is 880 cm (28'10½") tall and resembles a giantess, Big Mom is not actually a giantess, as the race is defined in the world of One Piece. Namely, in Chapter 866 of the One Piece manga, it was confirmed that the then five-year-old Charlotte Linlin was an ordinary human; she is oversized for a human, much taller than her parents, but she is not a giantess.
The rest of this article will focus on the character of Big Mom and her race. We know the answer to this question, so we'll tell you everything you need to know about it, as well as introduce you to the Giant race as it was portrayed in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece universe. Some spoilers may be present.
Is Big Mom a giant in One Piece?
To answer this question, we must explain who the giants are in the world of One Piece. Giants are a race of beings whose size dwarfs the other known races in the One Piece world. The most famous are those of Elbaf Island. Their lifespan is 300 years, making them the longest-lived race. There are also tribes of ancient giants and the unknown tribe of the Yeti Cool Brothers.
Being giants, they are literally gigantic human beings in appearance. They are so large that when they cry, their tears can cover large areas of the earth. Their conception and beliefs are mostly based on the Vikings, but not all of them seem to have a Viking theme, which is typical of the giants of Elbaf. Jaguar D. Saul told Nico Robin not to confuse him with the barbarians of Elbaf.
They should not be confused with large humans such as the Franky Family's Kairiki Destroyers or Bartholomew Kuma. To a giant, these humans are nothing more than "oversized ants." Large humans, at their tallest, reach that of a giant; a normal human is only as tall as an ankle in comparison. Edward Newgate, a large human, has shown that his entire body is barely larger than the head of the giant Lonz. Normal giants are at least 12 meters tall, while the tallest known human, Charlotte Linlin, is "only" 8.8 meters tall.

Some giants, such as Oars and his descendant Oars Jr., are about four times the size of an average giant and have horns on their heads, and can also have unique skin colors (such as pink or yellow). However, Sanjuan Wolf is even larger than them, being four times taller than Oars and as large as the Marineford headquarters building. He is considered unique among giants due to his enormous size, though this has been attributed to a power granted by a Devil Fruit that allows him to be larger than normal.
Giants have a much longer lifespan than any other race and can live at least three times longer than humans. Hajrudin looked like an older preteen at 18; as a giant in his early 80s today, he doesn't look much younger than Dorry and Brogy, who are almost twice his age. Jorl and Jarl are the oldest known giants, nearly three and a half centuries old, and have the appearance of old men. They are also frail, as Jorl died after being knocked to the ground because his body couldn't withstand that kind of injury.
During the Straw Hats' adventure on Punk Hazard Island, they came across the giant bones of a corpse that resembled the giants Oars and Oars Jr. Coincidentally, the entrance gates had a logo showing the image of the same giant horned skull. The island has housed numerous experiments to create artificial giants for use by the World Government; a practice passed down for hundreds of years, often with disastrous results. When Trafalgar Law discusses the experiments, a giant figure resembling Oars is shown.
The enlargement procedure failed for centuries due to its complexity. Even Vegapunk, the Navy's top scientist, failed in his attempt. His rival, Caesar Clown, was more successful, but his unethical procedures require the process to begin in childhood, and the side effects of continued experiments put their lives in mortal danger, and they would have died if they hadn't been saved. Under these conditions, it is unlikely that successful enlargement could guarantee the long lifespans enjoyed by true giants.
What is the relationship between Big Mom and the Giants?
The Giants harbor a fierce hatred for Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors. First, this powerful pirate was responsible for the death of one of the heroes of the Giant People, Yorle, when she was only 5 years old, as well as the destruction of part of the village of Elbaf. Then, as Big Mom celebrated her sixth birthday, while Caramel and the other orphans of the Sheepfold disappeared, a giant witnessed a scene that terrified him.
Giants around the world eventually heard the news, and from then on, their hatred and disgust for Charlotte Linlin were such that they no longer dared to speak her name. Much later, another event took place between the pirate's family and the Giants of Elbaf: the failed marriage between Charlotte Laura and Prince Loki. This marriage would end with Laura's escape and a failed attempt by Big Mom to replace her with her twin sister, Chiffon.
It was after this event that Big Mom renounced making the Giants her allies. Furthermore, although Linlin boasts of her dream of creating a utopia where species of all kinds could live in harmony and without discrimination, there is not a single Giant living in this place, and when Vinsmoke Jajji brings up this apparent absence, Linlin suddenly becomes angry.
Why is Big Mom so big?
Now that we've established that Big Mom isn't a giant in One Piece, the question of her height remains. The cause of Big Mom's height and weight has never been explored in detail in One Piece; however, we can assume that Big Mom is tall due to her eating disorder, which caused her to swell to an unnatural size reminiscent of a Giant.
What is Big Mom's race in One Piece?
Now that we've established that Big Mom isn't a giant in One Piece, regardless of her height, we can confirm that she's an ordinary human. This was confirmed in One Piece manga chapter 866, where we see a young Charlotte Linlin with her parents:

This panel confirms two things. First, Charlotte Linlin is human, as Oda himself wrote on the page. We can also see that her parents are ordinary humans, further supporting this claim. The second thing is that Charlotte Linlin was oversized since childhood and, by the age of five, was significantly taller than her parents. No reason was given, but we now know it's not because she's a giant.
