Attack on Titan Story Background

1,800 years ago, a human named Ymir Fritz became a giant humanoid called a Titan, after making a contract with the "Devil of All Earth." Since the heir to the Titan's power can only live for 13 more years, she died 13 years later, and her abilities were divided and passed down to her daughters before being split into nine individuals who eventually established the Eldian Empire. The Founding Titan , one of these Nine Titans , remained with the Fritz family; they conquered the nation of Marley and ruled it for 1,700 years.

However, a century before the events of the main story, the Eldian king Karl Fritz became disillusioned with his family's legacy and engineered his nation's downfall. Marley made the remaining Eldians second-class citizens and threatened to exile them to Heaven as mindless Pure Titans. Karl used the power of the Founding Titan to erase the Eldians' memories. Those who were unaffected were either bribed into nobility or turned into outcasts like the Ackermann family, who served the Fritz family.

Due to Karl's influence on his direct descendants to continue the deception, the Eldians of Paradis Island believe they are the only humans left on Earth, and assume the reason is because of the Titans. Unlike those who possess the power of the Titans, Pure Titans are mindless and barely aware of what they are doing. They only instinctively attack and eat any human they see. Their skin is tough and very difficult to penetrate. They can also quickly regenerate from all wounds except for one spot on the back of their necks, making this the only way to kill them.

In an effort to kill these Titans, the Eldians of Paradise developed their own military devices and departments. The first is the Survey Corps . They are the group that reclaims territory invaded by Titans. The second and largest branch is the Garrison Regiment , which guards the walls and its population. The third is the Military Police Brigade , which guards the royal family and leads a relatively relaxed life within the innermost wall.

Soldiers use a grappling hook and tether system called "Vertical Maneuvering Equipment" that allows them to leap up walls, trees, and high places to attack and kill Titans with dual swords, using gas canisters to propel themselves. However, while this is the soldiers' primary line of attack and defense against Titans, it does not work in open, flat spaces, such as fields.

Attack on Titan Plot

The story begins with Eren Jaeger living peacefully with his family, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackermann and his only friend Armin Arlert. They live in the Shiganshina district, one of the main cities located in Wall Maria.
However, everything changes when the Colossal Titan creates a massive breach that allows the Titans to enter the city. During the attack, Eren watches in horror as a Titan eats his mother while his father disappears after giving Eren the key to his basement. After his father's disappearance, Eren vows to kill all the Titans and decides to enlist in the 104th Training Corps with his friends.

Five years later, the three young friends have graduated from cadet training camps and are living in the Trost district, one of the border towns that separates Wall Rose. The same gigantic Titan appears, and the same story repeats itself. In the ensuing battle, Eren manages to save Armin from being eaten by a Titan, only to be devoured himself. Just as all hope of survival seems to have faded, an atypical Titan appears and attacks the other Titans instead of humans. This Titan turns out to be Eren, who, for some reason, can transform into a Titan, much to everyone's surprise.

Although some people, such as the nobles, clergy, and the Military Police , consider Eren a threat even after he helped them reclaim the Trost District, others see this ability as an opportunity to save humanity. Eren is put through a military trial during which it was ultimately decided that he should be part of the Army 's Survey Corps , assigning him to the Special Operations Squad under the command of Captain Levi None.

As the story progresses, many mysteries are revealed about Eren's ability to transform into a Titan, from why he gained such power to the fact that he isn't the only one with this ability. The origins of the Titans, the revelation of their true enemies, and the decisions Eren must make regarding the future of humanity, his friends, and himself are also uncovered.
