10) Mother-in-law

Bell-mere

Bell-mère was the adoptive mother of Nami and Noziko. She was a former Marine who decided to raise the orphans as her own daughters. She settled in Cocoyashi Village and lovingly raised the girls for nine years before her death.

Mother Bell was introduced in the Arlong Park Arc, where it was revealed in a flashback that she was killed by Arlong in front of her daughters for money.

His death deeply affected Nami and permanently changed her outlook on life. Bell-mère's courage and love for her daughters made her a very likeable character whose death is one of the saddest deaths in One Piece.


9) Hisiruluk

Hiriluk

Hiriluk was a charlatan who rescued some reindeer, Tony Tony Chopper, and took him in as a surrogate son. A former thief, Hiriluk was interested in medicine and wanted to heal people.

He had been suffering from a terminal illness for years, which he believed to be cured by the beautiful view of cherry trees and believed that such a serene view would cure all illnesses.

Due to his terminal illness, Hiriluk knew he would die soon. So, he selflessly ate the poisoned mushrooms that Chopper had unknowingly brought him, not wanting to break the child's heart. He later died of his own will, drinking his own failed concoction before he could be driven away by Wapol.


8) Otohime

Otohime

Otohime was the queen of the Ryugu Kingdom. She was the wife of King Neptune and the mother of Fukaboshi, Ryuboshi, Manboshi and Shirahoshi.

Introduced in the Fishman Island Arc, Otohime was a political activist who worked to combat discrimination between humans, fishmen, and merfolk and bring unity to both races.

She was murdered by Hody Jones, who framed a human pirate, further dividing the races. Otohime was someone who wanted to bring peace to the world, and her death was all the more tragic because it led to hatred contrary to her wishes.


7) Peter

Peter

Pedro, a resident of Zou, was a Mink Jaguar who joined the Straw Hats in their attempt to bring Sanji back from Big Mom's clutches. He was also the captain of the Guardians and was once the captain of the Nox Pirates, searching for the Poneglyphs.

In the Whole Cake Island Saga, Pedro traveled to Totto Land with the Sanji Recovery Team and sacrificed his life at the hands of Charlotte Perospero to ensure the team's escape.

He believed that the Straw Hats would bring about the dawn of the world. His heroic death greatly saddened the team and particularly crushed Carrot, his comrade Mink. His death, however, was avenged by Nekomamushi in the Onigashima Arc.


6) Shimotsuki Yasuie

Shimotsuki Yasuie

Shimotsuki Yasuie was once a daimyo of Hakumai under the Kozuki clan in Wano.

But after Kaido took over Wano and Orochi became the Shogun; he was forced to leave his post and eventually went to live with the ever-laughing residents of Ebisu Town under the name Yasu. He also adopted an orphan girl named Toko.

Yasuie's life was as impressive as his death. He joined the unfortunates of Ebisu in their painful laughter even though he had never consumed SMILE Fruit himself.

He did his best for everyone and ultimately sacrificed his life in a public execution to protect Kozuki Momonosuke's revolution. His sacrifice was a huge step in ensuring the rebels' victory over Kaido and Orochi.


5) Don Quixote Rosinante

Donquixote Rosinante

Don Quixote Rosinante was the younger brother of Doflamingo, who acted as an elite officer of the Don Quixote Pirates under the code name Corazon.

But secretly, he was also a Marine commander, working undercover in his brother's group to stop him. Rosinante also took in the young and ill Trafalgar Law as a ward and took the boy to several hospitals in hopes of curing him.

Rosinante came to truly love the boy and was heartbroken when none of the doctors consulted could cure him. But he kept a happy-go-lucky persona for Law.

After hearing about the Ope Ope no Mi, Rosinante took Law to get it but was killed by his brother. Even at death's door, the man clung to the last fragment of life to ensure Law could escape safely. His death scene and Law's silent screams break our hearts every time.


4) Edward Newgate

Edward Newgate, or Whitebeard, as he was more famously known, was a contemporary of Gol D. Roger and one of the four Yonkos before his death during the Marineford Arc.

Whitebeard was hailed as the strongest man possessing the most powerful Paramecia devil fruit, the Goro Goro no Mi.

Whitebeard stayed true to his fame and embraced death like a legend. Defeated by Blackbeard in a mysterious way, the old pirate died standing.

But not before declaring the existence of One Piece to the world. His death is undoubtedly one of the most iconic deaths in One Piece.


3) Kozuki Oden

Kozuki Oden

was to become the Shogun of Wano before fleeing to satisfy his thirst for adventure. He met Whitebeard and Roger during his journey and joined both of their crews at different times.

He also met his wife and had children around this time. Oden was aboard Roger Pirates on their final voyage to Laugh Tale and it was he who deciphered the Road Poneglyphs that led to the mysterious island.

Oden was a great man who sought to protect his country, even at the cost of his pride and honor. He made a fool of himself for five years to keep the people of Wano safe before being betrayed by Orochi and Kaido. Smiling until his last moment, Oden died a hero.


2) Going Merry

Going Merry

Going Merry was the first true ship of the Straw Hat Pirates, gifted by Kaya at the end of the Syrup Village Arc. Merry was with the crew on many of their voyages, traveling to unique islands and even Sky Island. But he also suffered several damages along the way, reaching his lowest point in the Water Seven Arc.

The fight between Luffy and Ussop over Merry was already excruciatingly sad, but its final moment was heartbreaking.

Loyal to her masters until the last moment, Merry saved the Straw Hats from Enies' Lobby before receiving a Viking funeral. In his final moments, Merry's spirit lets the Straw Hats know how much he loved being with them. It's a scene worth sobbing.


1) Portgas D.Ace

Portgas D.Ace

Portgas D. Ace was the sworn brother of Luffy and Sabo and the commander of the 2nd division of the Whitebeard Pirates. He was also the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.

Handed over to the Marines by , Ace was to be executed in a public ceremony which led to war between the Marines and the Whitebeard Pirates.

Luffy went to Hell and came back to save his brother, and when it finally seemed like he had succeeded, Ace died trying to protect Luffy from Akainu's attack.

He spent the last moments of his life in Luffy's arms, expressing his gratitude for being loved before dying with a peaceful smile on his face.

Her death plunged Luffy into intense grief, and her agony-filled screams would have anyone reaching for tissues. Ace's death was not only extremely painful, but it also changed Luffy in fundamental ways. Ace's death is undoubtedly the saddest death in One Piece.


Unconfirmed deaths in One Piece (probably dead)

One Piece has often left certain characters in an ambiguous situation, without ever explicitly revealing whether they live or die. Since we haven't seen them die in the series, or their deaths haven't been confirmed by other characters, it's safe to say that this could go either way.
