Oda's Monsters Anime: Plot Explained
The story of Monsters revolves around Shimotsuki Ryuma, the legendary samurai of Wano who is said to have slain a dragon. In fact, in Monsters, that's exactly what we see: the story of how Ryuma killed the dragon. The story takes place in an undetermined time in the past; Judging by the fact that it follows Ryuma, the events of Monsters were centuries ago compared to the current One Piece timeline.
Introducing Ryuma
Monsters begins with narration describing how a dragon horn was stolen 10 years before the story by an assailant who killed the guards guarding it. 10 years later, in an unnamed town, we meet Ryuma as a young man, hungry and penniless. After five days of starvation, Flare, a young waitress from a nearby restaurant, gives him something to eat.
At the restaurant, Ryuma meets Cyrano, a master swordsman who seems to know Flare before. Upon leaving the restaurant, Cyrano's sheath touches Ryuma's, causing the samurai to challenge him to a duel. However, the duel is incomplete after Ryuma passes through a copper statue and Cyrano refuses to fight him to the death. Ryuma is then reprimanded by Flare for his behavior.
He later learns from the restaurant owner that there was a dragon attack on a small village seven years ago, leaving only one survivor: young Flare. Cyrano saved Flare and brought her to this city.
Ryuma kills the dragon
Elsewhere, a third-rate swordsman named DR arrives in town and after bumping into Ryuma, claims that Ryuma stabbed him with a sword. In revenge, he takes out the dragon's horn and breaks it, calling the dragon into the city. The townspeople, including Flare, are all angry at Ryuma and scold him even though he swears he didn't do anything.
In this tumult, Cyrano arrives and tells the people to leave the city. He will fight the dragon himself. Grateful, the townspeople all leave but Flare stays in the town. After Ryuma asks her if the dragon is really that scary, she runs to stop Cyrano from fighting the dragon. However, she and Ryuma then see Cyrano and DR robbing the empty city.
The two overhear them saying that the dragon attack seven years ago was their doing and that Cyrano killed Flare's father, saving her only because he wanted to gain prestige. Flare is heartbroken and tells Ryuma to run away. But the samurai shoots Cyrano instead.
DR then summons the real dragon and Ryuma kills the enormous beast without a second of hesitation. The one-shot ends with him telling Flare that she owes him now and that he will come back to get in a better mood. The locals are amazed at Ryuma's feat. It is at this point that the restaurant owner reveals that Ryuma is given the title "King" by all the people he has saved over time and that he has the greatest "soul of warrior ".
Who is Ryuma?
Ryuma is a legendary samurai from Wano who was one of the greatest swordsmen in the world. Originally from , he was known as the man who killed a dragon. He was the owner of Shusui, one of the 21 Great Swords, which later became a national treasure of Wano.
During his lifetime, Ryuma's fame as a master swordsman was widespread, earning him titles like "King" and "Sword God". He is also a direct ancestor whose grandmother also belonged to the Shimotsuki family.
