History of Stone Breathing in Demon Slayer

In the early days of breathing styles, there was only one breathing style, created by . Using his innate superhuman powers, Yoriichi created the Solar Breath, deadly to demons. Later, when he met and befriended other demon slayers, he taught them the art of breathing styles.

However, none of them were able to achieve Yoriichi's Solar Breathing because the difference between his abilities and their abilities was so immense that it was impossible for them. In their quest for Solar Breathing, each of them ended up creating a new style of breathing. One of them was Stone Breathing.

It is one of the five original breathing styles that originated from solar breathing, along with water breathing, flame breathing, wind breathing, and thunder breathing. This is arguably one of the most difficult breathing styles to master and requires a lot of physical strength to achieve.

How Powerful is Stone Breathing?

In Demon Slayer, only one character has been shown using Stone Breathing, and that is Stone Hasira, Gyomei Himejima. The small number of users of this breathing style indicates exactly how difficult it is to master.

During the Hashira training arc, almost all of the demon slayers found themselves unable to perform the rigorous training necessary to master stone breathing.

Not only that, but the Stone Hashira is also the strongest one-to-one Hashira and the strongest member of the Demon Slayer Corps.

During the battle against Upper Moon One, the demon muses that Gyomei has reached the peak of human physical condition. Despite his blindness, he shows no weakness in combat and uses Stone Breathing to its absolute perfection.

A unique point about Stone Breathing is that unlike other Breathing Style users, neither of the two known Stone Breathing users uses Nichirin Blade.

If anything, their weapon choices are unconventional, with Gyomei using a flail and an axe, and the ancestor using a giant weapon that resembles a kusarigama. This raises the question of whether the Stone Breath cannot be channeled through the Nichirin Blades.

Stone Breathing All Shapes Explained

Stone Breathing All Forms Explained

Stone Breathing has at least five known forms that Gyomei uses through his flail and axe. There might be more forms of this breathing style, but he only uses five during the battle against Kokushibo whom he fights alongside Genya Shizanugawa.

But unlike the other Hashira, all of whom invented at least one new form of their respective breathing styles, it is unknown if Gyomei did the same.

Two major requirements for Stone Breathing are brute strength and total concentration. It uses the ground and the user's environment to channel their power into its forms and technique, its movements taking inspiration from stones and earth.

However, unlike other breathing styles that appear to leave afterimages of their respective element, Stone Breathing is simpler in the user's movements with their weapon.

Additionally, Gyomei has a reason to use the flail and ax as his weapon of choice. Indeed, during an attack, he listens to the clicking of the chain connecting the spiked flail and the ax to determine the distance from his opponent and understand his movements. This gives him precise control over combat despite his blind disadvantage.

I. First form of stone breathing: Hydra serpentinite

Stone Breathing First Form: Serpentinite Hydra

In the first form of Stone Breathing, called Serpentinite Hydra, the user throws the flail and ax towards the target with great force and speed and controls its movements through the binding chain.

This causes the flail and ax to spin as they rush towards the target. The purpose of this form is to pierce the target and force its way through the target's body.

II. Second form of stone breathing: crushing the celestial surface

Stone Breathing Second Form: Celestial Surface Smash

Stone Breathing's second form, Celestial Surface Smash, is exactly as its name suggests.

The user throws the flail and ax upwards while breaking the middle of the chain connecting them with their feet to create a pincer effect. This causes the flail to bounce and crash into the target with enough momentum to crush them.

During the battle against Kokushibo, the force with which Gyomei breaks the chain beneath his feet is such that the ground beneath him collapses under the weight.

III. Third Form of Stone Breathing: Igneous Reflection

Stone Breathing Third Form: Igneous Reflection

The third form of Stone Breathing has both offensive and defensive advantages. This form primarily uses the ax portion of the weapon. Named Igneous Reflection, the third form allows the user to perform a series of consecutive cuts with their axe. They are perfect for deflecting any attack that comes their way.

This form can also be used in an offensive context, where the series of powerful attacks with the aw would overwhelm any opponent without giving them much time to react.

The Stone Hashira uses this form to counter Muzan Kibutsuji's thorny vine attacks at the start of the Infinity Castle Arc.

IV. Stone Breathing Fourth Form: Rhyolite: Quick Conquest

Stone Breathing Fourth Form: Rhyolite: Rapid Conquest

Rhyolite: Rapid Conquest is the fourth form of Stone Breathing, and it is one of the best long-range attacks of this breathing style.

In this form, the user manipulates the flail and ax by their connecting chain, holding both sides of the chain with both hands. He then throws the two connected weapons at either side of the target, implementing a two-pronged attack.

V. Fifth Form of Stone Breathing: Brick Wheel Judgment

Stone Breathing Fifth Form: Brick Wheel Judgment

The last known form of Stone Breathing is the fifth form, Brick Wheel Judgment, in which the user unleashes an attack with their flail and ax so powerfully that they launch themselves into the air. After being triggered, the ax will strike the opponent first, followed closely by the trajectory of the flail which will then crash into the target.

With this attack, Gyomei decapitates Kokushibo after the Upper Moon One regenerates a demon head after losing the real one.

Conclusion

Stone Breathing is undeniably one of the most powerful breathing styles, outside of Solar Breathing and Lunar Breathing. It's no wonder that the only user is the strongest, Hashira Gyomei Himejima. This style of breathing proves vital in the Final Battle Arc.
