Admiral Ryokugyu in One Piece
In the Marines, there are usually three admirals, headed by a fleet admiral. Before the timeskip, the three admirals were Akainu, Aokiji, and Kizaru, with the fleet admiral being Sengoku. After the Marineford War and during the timeskip, Sengoku retired and Akainu and Aokiji were appointed to the position of Fleet Admiral.
After a long and tenuous battle, Akainu won and became the admiral of the Marine Fleet and Aojiki resigned after his defeat, leaving two admiral positions empty. The positions are eventually taken by Issho and Aramaki, forming a trio of admirals with Kizaru.
As an admiral, Aramaki is given the codename "Ryokugyu" and that is what he is normally called. Ryokugyu is the last admiral to make an appearance in the story and is the only admiral who has not encountered any members of the Straw Hat Pirates. The first time he is mentioned in the series is in the Dressrosa Arc and he makes his first appearance in the Levely Arc. His most important role so far is at the end of the Wano Arc where he arrives the day after the defeat of and .
History
Ryokugyu's history and past have not yet been revealed in the story. However, Eiichiro Oda gave his readers an idea of the kind of life the admiral may have lived before joining his post. In , he reveals that the tattoo on Admiral Ryokugyu's chest alludes to his sad and painful past.
The tattoo says "Shinagawa Shinjuu", which is the name of a famous play that ends in tragedy. The play tells the story of an aging and destitute courtesan who contemplates suicide but is too afraid to do it alone. So, she encourages a young man to commit a double suicide with her. The young man initially agrees but when he chickens out at the last moment, the courtesan pushes him off the bridge.
But as she prepares to jump on her own, a messenger comes to inform her that the money has finally arrived. Now that she will no longer be destitute, she rules out the idea of suicide.
Ryokugyu's tattoo and his connection to his past can mean one of two things: either he was betrayed by someone in the past, or he is the traitor who stabbed someone he cared about in the back.
Powers and Abilities
As an admiral, Ryokugyu is one of the strongest characters in the series. He's had very few opportunities to show off his powers, but everything he's shown is enough to hint at how powerful he is. Like the other Admirals, he is a user.
Devil's fruit
Ryokugyu's Devil Fruit, Mori Mori no Mi, translated as Fruit of the Forest-Forest, is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to manifest and manipulate plants. Like other Logia users, he has the ability to transform into a forest.
The plants manifested by Ryokugyu possess a diverse set of powers that make him a formidable opponent who can easily take on strong characters like Queen and Queen. His Devil Fruit abilities include:
- The plants he manifests can be controlled by him to move in any way. He can use plants to trap or stab someone.
- Its plants can also absorb fluid from a person's body, leaving them dangerously dehydrated and completely weakened.
- He can also summon an entire forest to launch a full-scale attack.
- Unlike most other Logia users, Ryokugyu transforms into something tangible. This makes it easier for people to attack him. However, like other Logia users, he is completely immune to non-Haki attacks and can regenerate. The only way to physically harm him is to use Haki-infused attacks.
- Ryokugyu can conjure certain parts of a plant to use them in a certain way. For example, he conjures up a huge flower to use as a propeller and fly.
- Besides offensive powers, Mori Mori no Mi also gives Ryokugyu a healthy ability. Plants can be reborn in its wake even in the most infertile lands, as is the case in Udon.
RIGHT
As an admiral, there is no doubt that Ryokugyu is a very proficient user of Haki in One Piece. He has been confirmed to be capable of using at least two Haki, likely in their advanced forms.
- He has been shown to use Busoshoku Haki while hardening the tips of the branches he conjures up to make them more deadly.
- Ryokugyu then proves capable of using Kenbunshoku Haki when he detects miles away in the sea when the Yonko releases its Haoshoku Haki. It is unknown if he can use advanced Kenbunshoku Haki and see into the future.
- There is no indication that Ryokugyu is capable of using Haoshoku Haki at this time.
Interesting facts
- Like other admirals, Ryokugyu also has an animal in his codename in One Piece. Ryokugyu contains the Japanese kanji “牛” which can be translated as cow, bull or ox. Its animal motif is that of an ox.
- Eiichiro Oda said he had a different design in mind for Ryokugyu in which the admiral had a pair of ox horns.
- Ryokugyu reportedly survived three years without any food because he found eating inconvenient. One fan speculated that he might have done this because he could obtain nutrients through photosynthesis from his devil fruit. Oda later confirmed that the theory was true.
- Every admiral has a certain philosophy of justice. Ryokugyu's philosophy is "Determined Justice".
- Unlike Fujitora, Ryokugyu has no sympathy for pirates or anyone associated with them. He admires Sakazuki for his extremist ideals regarding justice.
