The Valley of God Incident
Thirty-eight years before the current date, there was an incident that shook the rest of the world and would later be known as the God Valley Incident. It all started when the Celestial Dragons chose God Valley as the location for the human-hunting game they played every three years.
For this hunting game, they would go to any island they wanted and start hunting the locals and the slaves they brought with them.
The year God Valley was chosen as the location for the game, Emporio Ivankov and Ginny were among the slaves brought from Mary Geoise to serve as prey in the game hunt. Saint Figarland Garling, who was a player at the time, was a participant in the match and its top scorer.
There were also two powerful ones on the island, perhaps intended as prizes for the winners. These two Devil Fruits were the Paramecia-type Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and the Mythical Zoan-type Uo Uo no Mi; Model: Seiryu.
Attracted by these devil fruits, the Rock Pirates invaded God Valley, plunging the hunting game into chaos. The crew decided to have a competition among themselves to see who would get the Devil Fruits first. While Charlotte Linlin, Shiki, and were excited about the competition, and Gloriosa were less so. Captain John, Shiki and other Rocks Pirates crew members were also present.
The arrival of the Rock Pirates on God Valley brought the security of the Celestial Dragons into question, even with the Holy Knights present to protect them. While this was happening inside the island, the news was also spreading outside. When Roger heard about this, he headed to God Valley to fight Rocks and his crew.
Vice Admiral Garp, who was on vacation at the time, received news of the chaos in God Valley from Kong. Although he initially expressed disinterest in the safety of the Celestial Dragons, he rushed to the island with his team when he learned that Roger would be there. These four forces clashed in God Valley, resulting in a series of explosive battles that would culminate in the end of the Age of Rocks, known as the God Valley Incident.
Garp vs. Rocks Pirates vs. Roger Pirates vs. Holy Knights
Although the God Valley incident is famous in history, there is a lot of information missing in the world. The truth about the incident is only recently revealed in Kuma's story. Kuma, a child slave of the Celestial Dragons at the time, was present on the island and saw the beginning of the incident. He and Ivankov even had an altercation with Big Mom over the Devil Fruits, leading to Kuma eating the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and the other Devil Fruits falling into Big Mom's hands. She would later give the fruit to her teammate Kaido.
In history, the God Valley Incident is known as the incident in which Roger joined forces with Garp to defeat the Rocks Pirates. There is no mention of Celestial Dragons or hunting game. However, in Kuma's memories, we see that the incident was not a three-way battle, but a four-way battle between Garp and his team, Roger Pirates, Rocks Pirates, and the Holy Knights.
Kuma escaped the island with Ivankov, Ginny and the rest of the slaves to the Sorbet Kingdom with his newly acquired Nikyu Nikyu no Mi before Roger Pirates and Garp arrived on God Valley. This is why we only know the details of the beginning of the incident while the rest is left to our imagination.
The reason for the Rock Pirates' invasion of God Valley was that they had stolen a certain treasure from the . The Rocks Pirates came to God Valley to recover the treasure and take revenge on the World Nobles while Roger Pirates followed them for a showdown. Garp also joined the fight to face Roger, his long-time rival. This led to a four-way battle on the island.
Famous people involved in the God Valley incident
The God Valley Incident is one of the most notable events in history and many big names are associated with this incident. As mentioned earlier, we do not know the entire incident in detail and therefore do not know all the people who participated in the incident. But there are confirmed figures who fought in the God Valley Incident.
Let's see which characters took part in the historical event:
Rock Pirates
- Rocks D. Xebec
- Edward Newgate aka Whitebeard
- Charlotte Linlin aka Big Mom
- Kaido
- Shiki
- Miss Buckingham Stussy
- Glorious
- Captain John
Roger Pirates
- Gol D. Roger
- Silvers Rayleigh
- Scopper Gabban
- Millet Pine
- Sun bell
Garp's team
- Monkey D. Garp
- Bogard
- Naval officers
Holy Knights
- Saint Figarland Garling
- Two other Holy Knights (at least)
Who fought who?
In the four-way battle between the Rocks Pirates, Roger Pirates, Garp's team, and the Holy Knights, it is unclear who actually fought who. Each team had powerful members, some even legendary, so the fights had to be intense. Since we don't know who fought who during the God Valley Incident, all we can do is assume the fights from the scraps of information we get throughout the story.
Rocks Pirates vs. Roger Pirates
The most obvious fight is between the Roger Pirates and the Rocks Pirates. In addition to their prominent members, both crews had a large number of lackeys who undoubtedly competed against each other. There were also the Navy soldiers who were the enemies of the two pirate crews. So there must have been a chaotic three-way fight between the weakest members of each team.
The Holy Knights, on the other hand, are a proud group who would never engage with weaklings. Each Holy Knight present must have fought only prominent members of the Rocks Pirates.
Here are some of the likely fights that could have taken place during the God Valley incident. There is no official confirmation on this, these are just theories about what could have happened in God Valley at that time. Some of these theories are based on connecting dots with various character statements and some are purely probable conjectures.
Whitebeard vs. Garling
A popular theory about the God Valley incident is that Whitebeard clashed with Garling during this historic event. This theory originated when Garling was introduced in One Piece Chapter 1086. Currently supreme commander of the Holy Knights, his introduction once listed him as the ruler of God Valley.
However, in chapter 1095, Garling was revealed to never be the king of God Valley but one of the participants and the highest scorer of the hunting game on the island. It was also during this game that Rocks Pirates invaded God Valley and the two forces clashed. It is entirely possible that Garling fought Whitebeard during this encounter.
Another statement that many fans took as a clue to this theory occurred during Whitebeard's encounter with . The older pirate told Shanks that every time he saw his face, the old wound he received from "that guy" hurt. At that time, everyone believed that "that guy" Whitebeard was talking about was Roger, Shanks' former captain.
However, after Garling's introduction, fans began to make the connection between the Sky Dragon and Shanks. Garling is from the Figarland family, as is Uta, Shanks' adopted daughter. Given the mystery surrounding Shanks and his ties to the World Government, many believed there must be more to the relationship between Garling, Shanks, and Uta than what had been revealed thus far.
Shanks was also found as a baby by Roger following the God Valley incident, which is a very curious coincidence. Because of all these plot threads connecting Shanks and Garling, a portion of fans theorize that Shanks is actually Garling's son and that "that guy" Whitebeard was referring to is not Roger, but Garling.
There's no evidence of this matchup, but given the timing and the characters' similar power levels, it's entirely possible.
Rocks against Roger and Garp
The most obvious but unconfirmed fight in the God Valley incident is Rocks D. Xebec versus Roger and Garp. Rocks was the captain of the Rocks Pirates as well as one of the most infamous pirates of his time. He was a rival of Roger and Garp and it is said that it took the two of them to team up to defeat Rocks Pirates.
However, it is not mentioned which of them fought Rocks in the final battle nor if they teamed up against him in a two-on-one fight. It is possible that it was Roger who fought and defeated Rocks since he became the most prolific pirate in the world after the God Valley incident. But it could also be that Garp earned the title of "Hero of the Marines" after this incident.
The two could also have teamed up against Rocks, implying that the fallen pirate was stronger than either of them. But regardless, it's irrefutable that Rocks was one of the strongest characters on the show.
Legacy
Cited as one of the most important historical events, the God Valley Incident has an important legacy. This incident marked the end of an era where Rocks and his crew terrorized the seas. Roger became the most important pirate of his time, earning the highest bounty ever revealed in history and eventually becoming the Pirate King.
The God Valley Incident was also the trigger for the birth of many prolific pirate crews that would eventually become one of the most powerful forces in the world. Former members of the Rocks Pirates created their own crews.
- After the Rocks Pirates disbanded following the God Valley Incident, Whitebeard formed the Whitebeard Pirates to fulfill his need to start a family. Whitebeard would come to be known as "the strongest man in the world" after the deaths of Roger and one of the four Yonkos.
- Charlotte Linlin would later also form Big Mom Pirates, composed entirely of her children and become a Yonko. The same goes for Kaido, the Governor General of Beast Pirates and another future Yonko, called the "strongest creature in the world". Shiki would form the Golden Lion Pirates and eventually become the first inmate of Impel Down.
- It is unknown what happened to the rest of the crew after the incident, but the future of some of them is revealed. Gloriosa will eventually return to Amazon Lily and she currently serves as an elder advisor to Boa Hancock, the current Empress of the Kuja tribe. She is now known as Elder Nyon.
- Buckingham Stussy would eventually end up with a clone created by . She is currently known as Buckin and claims to be the mother of Whitebeard's son, Edward Weevil. With her son, she searches for the treasure left by Whitebeard and tracks down his remaining crew.
- The most mysterious legacy of the God Valley Incident is none other than Shanks himself. Roger found Shanks as a baby in God Valley without knowing his parentage and took the baby in. Shanks' true identity is one of the biggest mysteries in One Piece and the God Valley incident is a major part of it.
